On the ignition switch, the most common cause of this kind of problem is the actuator about to break. Try putting your tilt wheel straight before you turn the key, see if that helps.

Also would be nice if you would give us some details of what exactly Grandpa's truck is. Does it have electric shift 4x4 perhaps? The controller for that goes in the spot you describe.
