Batteries add weight and significant complexity (especially if you aren't just paralleling them). Bigger alternators are more expensive and cause more engine drag.

Random misfires and long crank could almost be a camshaft...

There are reasons Ford offers multiple motors in these trucks... the right motor for the right job. A 2.7 isn't the right choice for a loaded 4x4 CC/LB Plat.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter what motor, what gearing, etc. you have... you just can't beat physics. You're towing a brick down the road - you aren't going to see great fuel mileage.
