I don't know if you've found a solution but I had the same issue with my 2000. It took 3 shops to find it but it turned out to be a IPR valve. Apparently it is very hard to diagnose.

The Free-Spin kit won't give you any better...

The Free-Spin kit won't give you any better mileage as we already have an unlocked hub up front in stock configuration (if they still work). The real benefit is easier and cheaper wheel bearing...

Check the power door locks too. That's one thing I didn't check and they were all bad.
