They are through holes but I couldn't remember...

They are through holes but I couldn't remember off the top of my head how far through they were until an obstruction, so I grabbed the bottoming tap just in case.

Yeah sorry 3/8-16 is what I meant. I picked up a through tap and a bottoming tap from my old work. Just didn't want to use them until confirmation for obvious reasons.

You need to go farther than 50 miles to do a fuel economy test, but you do have a fuel injected small block paired to an overdrive. I think you could be in the low twenties.
