Why remove air pump?

I've seen a few threads about HOW to remove or gut the air pump (smog pump), but none of them really address the WHY. Has anyone done this and got better mpg, or a noticeable performance improvement?

I ran it till it started to sputter, then switched to front tank. So's it would be easier to drop the tank to change those hoses. When I fill it up, the gauge doesn't go much above 3/4.

Weird intermittent noise from water pump

The junkyard donor truck that I got the ZF CM from was also 94. Both my CM's have gussets at each end instead of wrapping around the frame like yours....

Putting a diesel in a half ton might not be such a good idea. The frame won't stand up to the torque very well. At least that's what I've heard.
