Did you by chance replace the caliper brackets too? I had spongy brakes myself until an old rotor on my L/R finally ate up a pad and I decided to replace with new rotors and pads all the way...

I have always used diesel-kleen in the WHITE bottle for the winter. No issues with gelling at-20 so far. Keep the truck plugged in if I plan on using it the next day...Otherwise...the bottle stuff...

I used an air chisel on the edge of the nut to spin it off. Once started it turns by hand real easy. Didnt need the fan tool.
Not sure if you have access to one of those or even an air...

I would disconnect the main feed to your glow plug relay and try again. Could be an issue with the relay where it is killing the power with a short. Starting right away, doesn't give it time to do...
