Try pushing in on the brake release handle....

Try pushing in on the brake release handle. There's a small spring that is supposed to hold it in, but if it's broke, or the mechanism is rusty/dirty, the handle can stick in the release position.

I'd almost bet on the hinge being broke, or the door being jammed. This system is designed in a way that defaults to defroster only when there is a vacuum issue.
Only way to know, is take it apart...
