Could be. I just know I'll be going over everything carefully, put it all together to spec, and be checking the gear engagement with some Prussian Blue so I know this won't happen again.

Head gaskets are a PITA with the engine still in the truck. I did both of mine, and had to do one side again thanks to a warped head...

It honestly seems it might be your best bet at this point...

The gear isn't in the way at all, it's very easy to work around. Did mine this way and have had no issues with it. Use a razor blade to clean off old RTV and wipe down with brake cleaner.
