It sounds as if you are close to having all of the problems with this one solved. Thanks for keeping me posted. J.S.

computer/PCM problems

You mentioned this potential problem in your list of original concerns. I suspect you will need to take your truck to a Ford garage and ask them to use their engine analyzer to see if it can figure...

Vacuum lines

My firend hasn't taken his truck to a parts store where they will run obd 2 codes for free, but it is a great idea. Perhaps doing so will give him an indication what isn't hooked up. We can...

I helped my son rebuild the lower end on his '01 F200 5.4 Triiton. We had trouble getting it started so we towed it to a Ford garage and they purged fuel lines. No codes. My son didn't want to...

Vacuum schematic

Thank you. It should be there, but it isn't. I have one 3/8" vacuum tube sticking out of the throttle body and can't find the line that hooks up to it or figure out where it goes or what it does. ...

Think twice.

The truck you describe has some serious issues, but they could be overcome. But first, any 4X4 will get considerably less mileage than a two wheel drive. Four by fours average 10 to 14 mpg at best....

Locked engine

It sounds as if your torouble is the crankshaft. Pull the engine and take a look at the 4 and 8 rods on the crank on both engines. The fact that the engine locked generally means something...

mating a rod with its cap

One weakness in the 5.4 is that it must use the oil that is specified on the oil-filler cap. Any variation can cause the spun-rod-bearing problem, even with an adequate level of oil in the oil pan....

5.4 rebuild

It depends on whether or not you intend to keep the truck. If it is a keeper, I would consider swapping your block for a professionally rebuilt engine. If you rebuild it, there are lots of...

5.4 upper engine knock

You have received good advice. The 5.4 was designed to run on either 5W30 or 5W20 oil, depending on the year. I would use 5W20. The 4 and 8 rod bearings have been known to go dry ans spin, even...

One of the issues with these engines is not using the recommended 5W20 oil. Thicker oils, such as 30W, often won't work properly in the 5.4 Triton engine or its kin--possibly due to the nature of...
