These beds on superduty trucks seem to rot from underneath.. make sure you blow out those cross members on the bed, clean everything out, and maybe spray some oil to keep the rust away.

And yes, sometimes his 5.9 does dip below 40 MPG, but only with 40,000lbs or more....

If soot is coming out of the hood, sounds like an exhaust leak somewhere.
Is his truck tuned?

If it is, check what the exhaust back pressure sensor says idling, driving a bit.

The 6.4 pump seems to fail electronically, but seems to be built stronger mechanically than the 6.7 pump. IMHO.

It's a cummins, it will last 1,000,000 miles easy. Even if stuff breaks on it, no problem, just fix it, THEN it will go 1,000,000 miles no problem.

Personally, I think the best type of transmission would be if they took the manual gearbox, and put reliable parts on it to autoshift electronically.
