Researching Humvee Wheels and Tires

Just researching this idea.

I have been researching the Humvee Wheels and tires for my 2004 F350 - I am interested because I have a M1101 Silver Eagle Trailer. (The Humvee Trailer)

I am wondering besides mods to the wheel (extensions or whatever) What other modifications do I need to make to a stock F350?

Since this will raise the truck does this affect the drive shaft, or transmission?

Do I also need to lift the truck?

I will have a slide in camper and be pulling the military trailer. I need to keep the center of gravity low for the camper, so not looking for 4" lift - but the 2" lift from stock will be good for the off road.where I am going.
(I will have airbags)

Carrying all the same tires and spares (truck and trailer) are a good idea for my application - but only if it works and is not harmful to the reliability of the truck.

Every stock Hummer I've seen has BFG all terrain T/A's size 315/70/17. I have these same tires on my 04 F350 and they fit fine, but they are a little tall for my 3.73 gears. They also rubbed on the front air dam and inner front wheel wells lock to lock until I installed a 4" lift kit.

I would venture to say going to less then 8 lugs is a very bad idea. As well as not being legal.

Yeah I am talking about active duty military Humvee not civi hummer wheels.

"Humvee" wheels have 8 lugs.

The tires are Goodyear Wrangler MT . This is the current duty.

Not so much inquiring about setting up the wheels but about changing from a stock F350 16" rims and stock tires to 16.5 37x12.50 -
What effect on other issues in the drive train:
gearing ratios, transmission issues, drive shaft, anything else.

cheezit 10-03-2010 02:46 PM

tires and wheels will have little effect on pinion angle. nothing to worry about there. if yoiu have a 4x2 truck you will have a harder time with the 37". 4x4 35 will fit stock. bigger requires a lift of min of 2"
gearing will change and milage will drop. regeariing wont help milage it will help return the lost bottom end.
it will be more noticable with 3.73 vs 4.10's
the trans wont care.
am I missing anything?

Cool thanks cheezit!

It is a 4x4. - So lifting 2" and re gearing.

I guess then it is figuring out suspension if 2" lift is involved. Lots to there I would guess.

Tackbar, swaybar hangers, shocks, .....

those rims won't have your stud spacing

Only way to get the old 8x6.5 lug pattern to work on your truck is going to be adapters, which personally make me cringe. But then if you run adapters, your wheels will stick out further and therefore will require even MORE lift. Like atleast 4-6'' to clear a 37'' tire. Then if you gonna put a slide in camper and pull a trailer your going to have to re-gear, which can be very costly. Sounds like ALOT of money and aggravation just to get the military look on your non-military truck.

cheezit 10-03-2010 04:06 PM

also when speeking about regearing a 4x4 you have to keep in mind you have two diffs to do so figure $3500 - 4k parts and labor.

and 16.5's don't have a saftey bead ,, thats why they are phasing out = flat tire tire unseats from rim

rayezra 10-03-2010 04:37 PM

Yeah sounds like a no go from here.

I had just scratched the surface looking into it and figured others had gotten farther.

I am not going to waste anymore time on it.

Thanks for the input.

if your running military humvee wheels then the safety bead locks are not a concern. military humvee wheels are 3 piece and bolt together. they have a outter and inner assemblies and when assembled are actually the only dot bead lock wheels or were avalible. they are actually double bead locks with run flats. the center piece sandwiches the tires locking it to the bead. the magnesium inner functions as a support incase air pressure is lost. as stated above the lug spacing is what is used for all gm and dodge 8 lug axles and pre super duty axles. you could get the hub mounting surfaces redont on either the wheels to match your current set up and gain the correct offset or have the axles machined to accept the wheels. the one thing i would caution you on is there are not alot of options in the 16.5 rim size. also 05+ truck cannot run less than 17" rims

I've got a half dozen or so Humvee wheels and tires and tried to see how they fit on my 92 f350 and they don't. There is such a wicked offset that the tire and rim hit the leaf springs with out a spacer of some type.

Edit: nevermind I see you don't wan't to use the hummer rim, I just saw that. I bought some black 16.5 inch rims for my half ton 77 ford and put the 37s on it.

good info ! I have forgotten all of that ,, it's been a long time since I messed with them

Lubbockguy1979 10-03-2010 10:42 PM

the biggest pita part is the rubber orings that actually seal the wheels. some guys on pirate 4x4 were using crisco to get them to seal.... but that was about 7yrs ago when i used to have a jeep and keep up with that forum. i have been out of the hard core 4x seen for a while. the rims were cheap then and people were using them for bead locks. there used to be a place that would cut the middles and offered offsets and custom centers for them.
