how to tell if EGR cooler is bad???
 

i'm working on a 6.0 in an excursion and was wondering how do i tell if the EGR cooler is good or bad??? What are the signs of a bad one?? Thanks in advance.

White smoke while idling and possibly lots of white smoke. Coolant disappearing. Easiest way to tell is to pull the EGR valve and if there is a puddle in the intake or the valve is really wet, then the cooler is bad.

That's jumping to a conclusion pretty quick. What symptoms caused you to suspect the cooler? Are they still there? UGA33 describes the symptoms when things have gotten pretty bad. It can be leaking long before it reaches that point.

09-8-3*** COOLANT LOSS - 6.0L

no was just asking if it was a visual thing or not. have turbo off and #7 injector out for replacement pulled EGR valve to inspect and clean and was looking at the cooler. no loss of coolant yet no smoke other than black created by bad injector. going through the normal stuff on this 6.0 to get it running good again. did the FICM repair yesterday that REALLY helped alot. Just trying to check everything while i got it apart. thanks Joe
