electric fuel pump

have any of you changed over to an electric fuel pump ?

and what all was involved in changing it over ?

WarOzz 08-21-2010 10:17 PM

oh F250 were are you!

Yea some guys have done and some swear by it, I myself am installing one by the fuel pump just to use as an auxiliary primer pump.

im here!im here!:D
yeah it's the only way to go.

have you heard of Mel the "moose pump" injector rebuilder over on OBN?
he's been running the E-pumps on his IDI's too.
loads of people have switched.
the first thing to do to an idi engine imho.
many like the old lift pump though.can't say that i get that one.but hey.everyone should be happy with their rig.:-X22

simple little mod really.
you need to remove the old pump.block it off using a BB chevy fuel pump block off plate.
connect the fuel line up to the filter, and install the e-pump of your choice down after the FSV (better wording would be "between the FSV and the fuel filter",just so you don't try putting it between the FSV and the tanks) on the frame rail
here's how to wire it so it just works when you turn the key,and you don't need to remember to flip a switch:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-terminal.html

if you get a leak what happens?
hard start because your then using your starter to prime fuel right? not with the electric.if you have a leak, and the fuel drained back,oh well.when your turn that key,by the time the WTS lite goes out, your primed and she doesn't miss a beat.i know for a fact.:D

what happens when you change a filter?
oh man,you have to fill the filter.dangit.you don't have any diesel on hand, and you just used up your fuel treatment.
well by the time you do get it full, then you need to use that expensive starter to prime, rather than start that diesel engine.
get out the wrench to crack open an injector line or two and make a mess lol.don't forget to put the battery charger on,it could be one of those fun times.screw that.
with the e-pump,you don't even need to fill the filter.just screw her on and turn the key forward.wait for the lite to go out, count to 30 slow(for your filter to full up,and push the air out of tank),and start it up instantly and drive away.:-X22

Less electric junk to go bad if you decide to go dip your frame rails in stuff that normally shouldn't reach them - standing water, snow, mud, etc. It's also a reliability thing - with the mechanical pump you know if your engine is running it will keep running, with the e-pump you need the alternator to be operational as well (e-pump draws more current than the FSS)...

ok good points.
the draw is only like 2 -3 amps i think though.

so about this one:
what happens sometime when mechanical fuel pumps diaphragms ruptures and "keeps running"?
we have seen those threads:
oh crap my pump just filled the base of my engine!
not gunna happen with the e-pump conversion.eliminated that risk.-ok,it's not often we read of that happening.
but hey,all it takes is once for that idi to get full of fuel, and she tosses her main or rod bearings.

so i guess one could say,it's one less mechanical junk to go wrong too.:D

what psi pump do you use to replace the old mechanical with ?

thanks for all the help

chicagodragon 08-21-2010 11:03 PM

what relay do you guys recommend?

Dave Sponaugle 08-21-2010 11:16 PM

7 PSI max pressure with a flow of about 30 GPH.

i just used the one that came with my keyless entry.it was one they included for starter disable and i didn't use it.
i just had to change a wire around in it to set it up like Dave showed me.

did you install a fuse before the relay so it was protected too?

shouldn't take much.anything like this:

you can spend 10 bucks i guess if you think you have too:

i do have a fuse. i used one of the $10 autozone universal relays that was supposed to be good for 20 amps and it just went bad on me. i was wondering if there was a better one to get.

LCAM-01XA 08-22-2010 01:03 AM

Get a more powerful relay, the go up to 40 amps. I buy mine from RadioShack, a bit cheaper they are too.

7 psi is enough to replace the mechanical ?

i thought they put out more than that

Festus Hagen 08-22-2010 04:42 PM
