Cranks but won't start

I have had no problems w/ my 95 PSD at all. Go to start in the morning to go to work and all it does is crank. Won't fire at all. Put in the spare CPS and still won't fire. The truck is stock except my 6637 filter and downpipe back exhaust w/ cat delete pipe. Had it towed to a shop on my rte and they are thinking it is the HPOP (hope not because they are spendy). What else should I be looking for? Need help, can't really afford a $2000 repair bill right now. The shop did get it to start for 30 seconds after changing the fuel fitler, but can't get it to go again.
Thanks

Sounds like a fuel issue. I had problems like that before and it turned out to be the IDM. Injectors were replaced soon after

Check the level of the HPOP reservoir. It should be within 1/2" or 1/4" cxan't remember. But if it is lower than that you have oil issues.
Check it before you try to start it and then immediately after.

Is wait to start light coming on? Check out the #22 fuse under the hood.

Does it smoke out the tailpipe when cranking?

ramrod7373 07-28-2010 04:16 PM

Does not smoke out the tailpipe when cranking. They can bypass the computer and put 12 volts to the IPR and it will fire up. Tryed a loaner ECU and IDM but still won't fire. need more help please.

check the wiring harness going to the ipr, if diesel leaks out of the "change fuel filter" sensor, the thing sticking out the side of the fuel filter towards the driver fender, with a black plastic cap, and always leaks, diesel will drip on these wires, melt the insulation off the wires, they will rub each other and no start(: mine did that and all i did was pull the wires apart that were all melted together and stuffed a paper towel between them to keep them from rubbing each other and viola fired right up another thing to do is unhook the fuel heater, cuz it can short out, blow a fuse, and cause a no start issue if the heater shorts out and blows a fuse so make sure to check all those maxis under the hood.

No smoke means no power to the PCM/injectors. Unplug the fuel bowl heater and replace the blown 30amp maxi fuse under the hood and she'll probably fire.

Called a local diesel shop and talked to the owner. He said his 1st inclination is the ICP. But he isn't the tech. I am having it towed there tomorrow. I hope is an easy fix. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will keep you all posted on the outcome.
Thanks again

unplug the icp and see if it will start, i swear i have seen it work twice on friends trucks. especially if you washed the motor with a high pressure sprayer, that will #/*! up the icp and cause a no start issue

craftsmangary 07-29-2010 08:47 PM

If they put 12v to the IPR that will close it 100%, sounds like ICP problem. What is ICP when you crank it? should be 500psi + if not look for a leak.
You need to know this first before waste money on test parts
Sounds like this shop is guessing, guessing is expensive - how much can you afford

The shop I originally towed it to was a friends shop that repairs big rigs. They said they prob can figure it out. They worked on it and couldn't figure it out. So he told me to tow to the diesel shop. Had it towed there this a.m. and they might get to it Firday....or Monday. Haven't heard from the diesel shop yet(didn't figure I would). Don't know what is going on. My buddies shop who was working on it originally did alot of tests to try and diagnose, but couldn't do it. Where is the ICP on these trucks? I might get me one and try it over the weekend, the diesel shop is 1/2 mile from my house.

the icp is on the driver side head sticking up and toward the middle a little, but if it was that, it would run just by un plugging it and try cranking, the ipr is under the fuel filter housing, just to the driver side, look at those wires real good and make sure the insulation is not melted together, theres only two wires, if thats the case, it will fire as soon as u get them apart from each other. this sounds like a simple fix really.

does the tach come up a little when ur cranking it? like to 300 rpm or so?
