what engine do i have
I bought a 1968 f100 and the guy told me a 289 was in the truck but i was wondering if there was any way to tell if it was unmistakenably a 289 or not? It suppose to have came with a 360 but i suppose that has long since passed any info would be great

Your truck could have a 289 stuffed in it, but let me first ask if you can identify the FE engine? The intake goes under the valve covers about an inch, and the spark plugs are angled like this // \\

In 1969, Ford introduced the 302 in F100's. The 302 is an enlarged 289. You bought a 1968, but are you sure that's what it is? It could be a 1969 w/a 302. 289/302: 6 valve cover bolt holes per side. 360/390: 5 valve cover bolt holes per side. Post the last 6 digits of the VIN which will verify the year. |
Wow...he says the truck was a 360 originally...people do swap the original engines out over the years on these vehicles, "factory installed" doesn't mean squat anymore in many cases.
Here's an FE engine (360 or 390, both look exactly the same.) Identifying features: Intake manifold runners partially covered by rocker covers, as John said. The exhaust port runners extend out from the head ending with flanges that have the top exhaust manifold bolt holes through these flanges. 5 valve cover bolts, very rectangular shape to valve cover: http://cdn3.ioffer.com/img/item/144/647/589/kg6a.jpg Vertical (top to bottom) exhaust manifold bolts (for most FE engines) Distributor goes through the intake manifold This is the only Ford engine that has this feature. http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...2/2b/390FE.jpg 289/302 features: 6 valve cover bolts Note distinctive shape of the 289/302 valve cover, where it angles in at the top: https://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l...g?t=1278256859 Horizontal (front to rear) exhaust manifold bolts Intake manifold curves around the distributor http://image.customclassictrucks.com...istributor.jpg The 289 is a very compact engine, so it will look virtually lost in the large engine compartment of these trucks where the larger 360 fills it pretty well. And if someone did change the engine and you're looking to change it back, they'd have changed the tranny too since the bolt patterns between the two engine families discussed here are totally incompatible. |
I went and checked it over after church first to John the spark plugs on the left side if sitting in cab of truck are angled back to the firewall and the other side towards the engine bay
to Bill VIN F10YNC99835 also the bolt pattern is a six bolt on the valve covers; the intake manifold has a stamp prolly not helpful but its C60E-9425-A and the firing order is 1542637 im thinking since it starts at eight no need to count it? And i have found a 429 with a c6 attached would this be an ok choice for engine swap or would it take heaven to hell to get it done thanks |

to Bill VIN F10YNC99835 F10 = F100 2WD / Y = 360 2V / N = Norfolk VA Assembly Plant / C99835 = 1968 also the bolt pattern is a six bolt on the valve covers; the intake manifold has a stamp prolly not helpful but its C60E-9425-A. Fits 289: 1964/67 Galaxie/LTD/Fairlane/Comet / 1965/67 Falcon / 1966/67 Bronco. |
so ur telling me that it is a 289 then correct?

The intake manifold gasket is the same: 221/260/289/302, which means the manifold can be swapped from one engine size to another. Look on the harmonic balancer for the stamped Ford ID number, post what it is. The harmonic balancer used on 1965/68 289's is not the same as anything else. |

it was actually in an ambulance
I also found a 70's model either mercury or ltd with a 460 in it you think if i used it with the same motor mounts it would drop in fine and im going with i have a 289 i couldnt find no numbers on the harmonic balancer |
The ambulance was prolly an Econoline. Econoline engine mounts will not work in F Series trucks, neither will passenger car mounts.
You need 1973/79 F100/350 460 engine supports (R/L); the R/L brackets that bolt to the block-the rubber insulators bolt to these, and the two rubber insulators-R/L is the same. |
well I have looked all over the harmonic balancer and i cant get my head behind it to see so i still cant find any definitive markings there
I have also some other questions aboutthe 460 swap do you know what type of mounts i would need or where to find them would the location have to be moved forward or backward or do you know of a thread were someone is doing this u could refer me too also are 289's valuable or should i just scrape it |
If the 289 runs well, you should be able to sell it pretty easily. They were a great engine.
I put a 460 into a '72 a couple of years back. I got the perches and mounts from a truck in the wrecking yard, I think it was a '76 but can't recall for sure. I didn't pay any attention to that, I just needed a Dentside with a 460 to scrounge parts from. The engine perches bolted right up to the crossmember, I may have had to drill one hole per side but I can't recall for sure. I do seem to recall that they sit fairly far back on the crossmember, but the best thing to do is just pay attention to how they're situated in the donor truck when you pull them off and look for holes in corresponding locations on your own truck. |
