Rear Drive Shaft Length

I am trying to find the length of the rear drive shaft for a 1988 F150 4x4 with a M5R2 tranny. I am in the process of swapping the M5R2 into my 86 F150 but am wanting to know if my rear shaft is the same length? Could anyon measue theres for me or tell me if mine will work. I've currently got a 4sp-od tranny right now with a np208 transfercase. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

I would call a drive shaft service/shop, or your local scrap yard. They have books with the proper lenght, and the knowledge of what will adapt

Thanks though. Thats the only thing I need to know before I do the swap. Im gonna measure the trannys and compare them. Gonna try to get to the junk yard tomorrow and see if they can tell me anything.

Anyone else?

I've found some information on drive shaft lengths. I calle some junk yards around and one finally had a dimension for the shafts. They said 49 1/4. Another one I called said they had one that was 48. These are from weld to weld on the drive shaft. I measured my 4sp tranny and the new 5sp and there was a 3inch difference. Mine was 26" and the 5sp was 29". My drive shaft on my truck was 51 1/4". So I know that I need a 3" shorter driveshaft. I called ford and asked them if the could tell me any dimensions on it and they couldn't! I'm gonna go to a local junkyard tomorrow and sort through there pile of drive shafts and see if I can find one. If anyone else has any advice or any measurements any help appreciated!! Thanks
