casting numbers

hello guys im new here. i just bought a 1969 f100 ranger shortbed a couple of weeks ago and i have a question for ya. by the vin of the truck has a 360 fe engine in it. how can i tell for sure thats whats in thier. im not sure where the block casting numbers are on this truck. thanks-Ryan

Ranchhand96/68 06-06-2010 12:09 PM

Casting numbers wont tell you that since there the same block. Can tell by measuring the actual stroke, if the pan was off casting codes on the crankshaft would tell you. Or if it runs like a one legged dog down hill its a 360 :) I had one it got along ok.... Def wasnt much on power. Thats prob whats in it though i think its more common.

:cool:thanks for the info on that. i thought the numbers would tell ya but that must not be the case. thanks again for the response.

The FE are hard to say whats what without studying and taking some things apart. I put a engine in my old pickup last week that has HD 105 truck block thatd id bet was a 361 prob coulda been a 391. The crank was the reg 390 crank not the steel truck crank and the intake was off a S code 67 Mustang engine ive gathered, and it sounds like there a RV cam or something in it lol So you really dont know whats in those old motors till you start playing with them.

ok can you give me a little help on the carb then. its a holley the number thats on the front is 3310-6 from what i'm finding it looks like its 750cfm model # 4160. does that sound correct?

Ranchhand96/68 06-06-2010 01:09 PM

Holley 4160 750cfm Carburetor 3310-6 $190.00

Thats what popped up on google sounds like it is.

Just bought a carb kit for my holley today the parts stores locally want 80 bucks! for a kit... I went on ebay and found a new Big A kit thats prob 20 years old but unopened and sealed for 15 bucks. Prob better quality to then ones made now. If you need a kit i wouldnt recommend your local parts store.....what a rip off

thanks man you've been a big help.

hunterdeska1 06-06-2010 01:58 PM

do you know where i might be able to get a workshop manual for my 69?

Ranchhand96/68 06-06-2010 11:46 PM

Well i found a outfit called Bishko reprint the old manuals. I cant see where haynes or chilton go back that far. If you get a 73 and up manual itll cover your engine basically. The haynes and chilton ones are available via various online distributors and i think the printers themselves. Ebay may be a good option maybe a old one will pop up.

About carb kits:
It's funny, I had the opposite experience when I was looking for a kit for the Autolite 2bbl on my '67 352. A couple of online places had it for about $25, which was reasonable. But I happened to be in the local Trak Auto and asked. I was amazed, but they had one right in stock for $12. So, it doesn't hurt to ask. $80 does sound high for a Holley kit. There's not a whole lot of parts in that kit.

About shop manuals:
Also keep watching on ebay in the Motors/Parts & Accessories/Manuals & Literature section. People are regularly selling used factory Ford manual sets. Price will depend on how clean they are. I picked up a set of '67 manuals for about $45 total, including shipping. The covers are a little greasy, but they work fine!

Ranchhand96/68 06-07-2010 06:31 PM

yep last holley kit we got from carquest was like 87 dollars if i remember right def was over 75. Of course since its one of those corporate owned outfits and we have more bean counters than workers we are limited to options can only deal with business with accounts. It makes no sense to me i could save them way more money shopping around then buying from the people they limit us to.
