'74 F-100 Build thread "prerunner" (desert truck) LOTS of PICS

Hi all.

As some of you know I snagged a '74 F-100 about a year ago. As much as I have tried to fight the urge I am working on it now. I know I SHOULD be getting my crew cab running, but this thing is sitting out in front with no motor in it so I's getting priority now. For those of you wondering why I haven't been posting in my crew cab thread - here is why...

I've been putting off starting a thread for a while but I'm already working on the thing so I figured I might as well start documenting it.

I'll post a little here now and add more as I have time over the next week or so - until I get caught up.

Oh - and I just put "prerunner" in the title because that's what people think about when they see these trucks. The reality of it is it will see some prerunning miles, some chasing miles, some play miles and maybe even some race miles. In reality it will be an all around desert truck build. One done right - the way I want it!

I'll start off with the truck. 1974 F-100 2wd. I bought it like this - not running.

I paid for it 4 months or so before picking it up. I didn't really have a place to store it (that'll be a running theme throughout this :-down) so keeping it out there fore a while was fine.

The time came to pick it up as the previous owner wanted it gone. Getting it home was an adventure in itself - but we made it 8 hours and 2 trailers later:-X18

Since I had decided to have custom fiberglass fenders made for this thing I already had lined up for my guy in Vegas to start that soon after I got this home. This was good as I still really didn't have a place to store the thing...
Out front it sat - but at least it was "home" finally.

In getting it home I was reminded it had had an engine or wiring fire. The pic below is how I got the thing - flag and all. The flag was carefully folded up and placed in the shop. It will fly behind the truck when it's done. No time to worry about the wiring or lack of top end on the motor now though. The truck had to get ready for Vegas.

Because the truck was leaving again a week after getting it here and since I wanted it to have 35's on it for when they were making the fenders I started tearing into it to throw on the Autofab lift kit I had sitting here.

1 piece at a time (coils but on bent beams here) the parts went on

And then it looked like this

Ok. With that done - off to Vegas we go...

The truck was in Vegas for 8 months or so while they did the fenders. That was perfectly fine with me though as I really didn't have room to store it (or the trailer I bought to tow it out there and back), plus I needed to focus on the crew cab.

Fast forward to about a month ago and the fenders are done and the supercab is home

That's when the fun begins...

I had to do a double take with the pic of the flag. Good to know you're maintaining old glory!

Witty73 05-27-2010 11:47 AM

Are you going to paint it that same 2 tone combo when your done? :-missingt

'96 Bronco 05-27-2010 12:48 PM

subscribing to see what you do with it

ChaseTruck754 05-27-2010 02:35 PM

Whoa - I got more replies than I ever could have imagined - haha.

I figured posting it up here instead of the 4x4/offroad forum (dislike a couple guys down there so I avoid the whole forum to avoid them:-roll) I might not get much interest.

Glad you guys are on board though.

This build will be a long, drawn out one done in a few stages, but I think you'll like what you see.

Neither. It's a 4" made up of random parts I had lying around and horse traded for.

Naw - a slightly different "3 tone" has been the plan. Paint doesn't help something run well, function off road, or really do anything but cost a lot of time and $$ so don't be surprised if it doesn't get painted for a looooong time. Most of my trucks never get around to being painted until the day they go up for sale.

And on that note - I'll leave you hanging for a bit more.

I'm off to lunch and will post up more when I get back
