clunking noise front end of ranger

I have a clunking noise in the front end of my 2000 ranger 2wd. more noticable in warm weather. coming from right side, when going over dips or small bumps. just changed the front shocks they were shot but did not cure the noise, when i had it up on the lift everything seemed tight. thinking sway bar bushings or coil spring not seated right. does anyone else have any ideas on how to fix this problem? thanks

I think you're having the same problem as I am. (and I think Thumper47 too) Neither of us has been able to track it down yet. I did get my state inspection last week though and was told that my steering rack was seeping and needed replacement. Not sure if that is where the noise is coming from but I guess I'll find out when i get around to replacing the rack....for the second time....

If you have a stabilizer bar the links( at the ends of it) can break and make noise. I would also suspect ball joints as 3 in my 2003 have already failed and been replaced. If that's the problem make sure the replacements have grease fittings as the originals don't and the primary cause of em failing in the first place.

that front end rattle made me nuts for 2 years !

My '03 had a clunk in the front end for years. I bought it new. The first time I took the truck in to a Ford dealer about it the mechanic said it was "normal slop in the drivetrain". I didn't believe it, but thanked them and got my truck out of there. Two years ago a different Ford dealer replaced the defective lower ball joints and told me everything else was fine even though the clunk continued. I continued to drive the truck while playing close attention to the clunk. About two months ago the clunk got very frequent and so noisy I took the truck to the neighborhood mechanic who works on our '69 Chevelle and the upper ball joint on the passenger side was about to break off. I would suggest taking off the front tires and try to get a pry bar between the upper control arm and the upper ball joint, try to lift it and check how much play is there. Good Luck and keep us posted.
