1992 Explorer 4x4 Front wheel bearing torque ?

I am working on my explorer again. Its a 4x4. Replaced rotors, calipers, and pads. The one problem I have always had is getting the correct torque spec for the front wheel bearing lock nut. I know back in the old days you would torque the wheel bearing down to set the bearings, thing then back the nut off a bit and stick in a cotter pin. I have even looked in manuals and the torque procedure was always vague. If someone could clear this up it would be a great help !

Same basic procedure, only instead of a cotter pin, there's a locking key (auto hub) or locking ring (manual hub). If you want to put numbers to it, haynes/Chiltons specify 30-40 ft lbs for seating the bearings, and about 16 inch lbs for the final torque.

Thanks Mr. Shorty. I have them FAR too tight then. Thats great knowledge, you probably just saved me a set of wheel bearings !
