Tried "food grade" hydraulic fluid, running like crap!

I got a 55 gal of used "food grade" hyd fluid for "free" on Craigslist. After draining the water from my filters :-arrgh I got her running. The exhaust smells down right "caustic" and kinda burns the senses. And I'm guessing because it's alot thicker than #2, it takes a bit longer to get through the injector so consequently I get lousy acceleration with occasional sputtering at idle. BUT, the engine is a LOT quieter LOL. I figure I had about 20 gals B100, pumped in about 15 gals or hyd fluid, and then put in 9 gals of #2 tonight to thin it all out a little. Woulda put more #2, but only have a 55 gal tank.... So after running the tank with #2 in it, it seems to have gotten a bit louder, and has a bit better acceleration. I figure I'll just keep it topped off with #2 till it's good and thinned out. Hoping that works!

Welcome Danny! Haven't seen ya here in a while. Most food grade hydraulic fluids are synthetic, and synthetic oils do not work very well in diesels. I would be very leery about using it..................

Well its a bit too late LOL. Yeah Fabman, I've been spending most of my time on the 7.3 forum. Since (a) the wife shot down any hopes of me getting into bio production and (b) I found a great source for $2.35 a gal, I haven't had many questions to ask lately. But yeah this stuff sucks. I feel it just isn't mixing that well with the B100 and additonal #2 I put in the tank, so until it warms up, it runs like a dog. Even afterward it still has the occasional short sputter. BUT, if it isn't mixing with my the other 2 fuels in my tank, I know I only have about 10 more gallons of it to burn off. If it is, I got another 55 gals to go. But with me having to tow tomorrow, I might have to drain the tank and put in fresh #2, and burn this crap a little at a time afterward.

Do yourself a big favor. Dump all that crap and chalk it up to a learning experience. Syn fuels will destroy your injectors and IP....................

howdy race fans,
it just plugs um up. and really hard to flush out. last time ran across that it took me 7 hours just to get the damn thing to start and run on its own. i think it cost the guy 3300$ to get it straightened out.

I tell ya I was really hoping to get by with just running it til it's gone, but I do need the power to tow tomorrow. Luckily I have a drain plug on my 55 gal tank. I'll drain about 20 gals leaving me with about 25 gals of whatever the hell is in the tank.

I know you said to dump it all, but I don't have anywhere to put it. SO I was thinking if I dump in a whole bottle of DK grey and top it off with #2 it'll be ok? It'll either be thinned out, or the hyd oil will drain out in the 20 gals I pull.

Please share with us california brothers where you get B100 for 2.35 a gallon. Thanks Blackbart

Bart, I couldn't PM ya 'cause you're too new I'm assuming. If you want, shoot me an email mongo75@aol.com
