Labor cost for 2wd Ball Joints
 

I have a 2001 F250 2wd and at 195,000 it needs all 4 ball joints as the tires are leaning a little and wearing incorrectly. They are the original ball joints. Ive been busy lately and I priced at a local shop costs for the labor. If I supply the ball joints, they want $200 for the labor to install the 4. Good deal?

Considering the labor rate at my garage in central GA is $85.00/hour. You must be getting a great deal, IMHO.

I just had all new ball joints and tie rod ends put on my 2001 F350, with 150,000. They charged me 72.00 per ball joint to install them. Total bill was right at 1000.00.

I had it done today. I have a connection at a major automotive warehouse for sourcing most aftermarket mechanical parts. The 4 moog ball joints (2wd)were $112 wholesale total out the door. They didnt have them in stock and it took a day to get(ordered yesterday pm , picked up by me at 10 am today). I dropped off the truck at 1030 am and had a friend hike me back to work. 330 pm I recieved the call the job was done. I was there at 4pm, and the bill was as quoted $200 labor even, and the old ball joints were in a box on the passenger floor incase I wanted to inspect then. Shop was slow and had 2 other cars to work on 1 for brakes, the other had a head off the engine. Atleast 4 empty stalls. Quick fast and reasonable , and not a grease print anywhere. If you are in Chicago I would recommend them. E mail me for an address. Very happy. Especially since most shops frown on customer supplied parts.

$312 all said and done; not bad at all. Considering that in a 4x4 application the parts alone cost that much.

I havent priced 4wd parts yet but eventually will. Ive got 1 with shift on the fly, and from what Ive been reading its way more complicated. Overall I do 95 % of my repairs, but occasionally farm an item out.

There's a superb write-up on 4x4 ball joint replacement in the Tech Folder courtesy of Racerguy. It's complete with pictures and everything. It may seem like a complicated job, but if you can turn a wrench, you can do it. It's a time consuming job the first time around, but his write up make it very do-able.
