2001 f150 2wd rear end problem

I have a 2001 f150xl 4.2 2wd reg. cab that I had a rear end replaced 7 months ago because it was humming (The mechanic said he couldn't find just the baring for it. (something to do with the company that made it went out of business) Now the one that was put in is doing the same. The new one had 35,000 miles on it and Because it was a used rear end I can't get my money back. What is causing this and how do I fix so it doesn't keep reoccurring ? Can you tell me what size rear end it is and what gear's are in it ? The tire's are 235/70/16 if that help's......"

Your mechanic is full of (insert favorite word here), find one that knows what he's doing.
The axle code is on the white sticker / decal on the door or door jamb, you will also find a description on the metal tag bolted to the differential on the rear cover.

i have a 02 same truck and i had the same issue you did it might not be your rear end check your driveshaft, it has and internal skeliton sort of, and mine had lost a section inside, take it out and knock on it with your hand all over and listen for a rattle mine only broke in a spot the size of your hand and it was humming rather loudly, only way we found out was one of my buddys had a f350 with the same problem bout a week b4 mine broke

I just got my truck back , the mechanic couldn't find another rear end after having it for 4 weeks, so now it's up to me to find one. Here's the info I found on my door 9" axle 18 I have no idea what this mean's so there for I don't know what gear's it has..

Can you tell me what can to acspet to pay for a bearing kit.I really don't want to go used again.......

airmanline 03-05-2010 03:15 PM

well in parts it depends on which rear end you have it can be anywhere from 100 to 300 for just the parts

Ron and the guys are right. They probably only made 10 million of those axles in the last 10 years !! Not being able to find a good used, or not being able to rebuild one due to "no parts" is a bad excuse. They should not go out that quick. Might want to find out why... also , which bearing ? If you have a wheel bearing going out, that can be changed out on a saturday morning in 2-3 hours for under $50.

I'll second what Steve said....along with you needing a new mechanic. the 8.8 is on of the most common rear's out there....I beleive you have the 3.31 ratio open differential. You should be able to eaily locate around 50 of them in your local surrounding area....
