distributor

Hey guys . I was wondering , I have a 1979 f250 4x4 with a 351m, it has the small distributor cap, and any I have seen have the small cap as well, yet when I go into a parts store such as Napa , their books say it should have the big cap. You guys with 'm' motors which distributor cap does yours have and what year is it? Thanks

Someone changed the distributor, using one from a 1976 or earlier car/truck.

The same V8 distributor cap is used on all 1977/79 Passenger Cars, F100/350's, Bronco's & Econolines, regardless of what size the engine is > >

E2ZZ12106A .. Distributor Cap (Motorcraft DH411). This cap is grey.

E2ZZ12A217A .. Base Adapter (Motorcraft DJ6) / Use w/E2ZZ12106A Dist Cap.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
D5AZ12106A .. Distributor Cap (Motorcraft DH354). This cap is blue.

Fits: All 1975/76 V8's.
----------------------
B7A12106A .. Distributor Cap (Motorcraft DH6). This cap is black.

Fits: All 1957/74 V8's.

D5AZ12106A can be used in place of B7A12106A and vice versa.

D5AZ12106A replaced B7AZ12106A, which was the (brown) HiPo dist. cap used from 1957 thru 1973.

Thanks Bill. I always enjoy reading your posts, you have way too much valuable info. Is there a parts catalogue on disk that you would recommend? Unfortunately for me the local dealers all threw out their catalogues before 1980 and I've been lucky enough to have meet 1 older parts guy who has a lot of the older stuff in his memory.

The 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com.

If you have a Bronco: The 1973/79 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com.

Believe it...or not...Bronco parts are listed in the Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalogs from 1966 thru 1979. :-X15

so is the D5AZ12106A a cap and adapter?

I never understood this cap and adapter thing, always seems like there is more play in the unit that way why isn't it 1 unit?

Nope.

The adapter (E2ZZ12A217A) was first used in 1977. Prior years do not have it.

The dizzy used beginning in 1977 isn't the same as prior years, either.

but why? why not 1 part? I dont understand it seems more prone to problems
