That sounds good, and gets down the track pretty quick. One thing I found wierd, he was launching in 4Hi, isn't it a bit hard on the truck to run 4x4 at those speeds?

Where have you been!? It's common, at least with the diesel drag-racing crowd, to launch in 4hi. In fact with all the torque that even a lightly modded diesel produces, a 4x4 launch is almost necessary to get traction. In a 1/4 mile run, you're going straight ahead so the tires should all be turning the same speed, no problem running 4wd. It's when you're turning on dry pavement, especially with a mechanical 4wd system and there's no slippage between tires that you can potentially damage drivetrain components. That said, a Super-Duty with SFA and Dana 60 on the front end is pretty solid. One of the complaints with the GM/Chevy is that the factory CV joints on the IFS doesn't hold up well to 4hi launches. However, a turbo-diesel that's putting out 650 ft-lbs at low RPM is more likely to twist things up than a gas engine that's only putting out 385 at a much higher RPM (that is not right off the line). Maybe the IFS front can hold up to 4hi launches (or the Ford front end is less likely to blow up than the Chevy) at those power levels. Edit: Just realized we're talking super-charged 5.4 at 520 ft-lbs. Super-charged means the power comes on quick. Guess the Ford just makes better front-end components! |
