Great Wheelin' / Trailin' / Muddin' places - Community

I figured we might be able to compile a list of places to go wheelin' and muddin' in Washington, I haven't seen any attempt at this yet, however I'd like to start it off with a legal one.

Exit 38 on I-90 goin' east just before the pass, Theres probably 10 miles-ish of trail, some extreme 4x4ing needed, I got stuck around 1.5 miles up with my 2wd ranger

I know a crapload more places but none of which are deemed 'legal' :( Anyone else have any ideas/locations?

lostmybeer 02-10-2010 01:14 AM

You were stuck, 2wd up by the fire training school, interesting. Well, I can tell you about a trip Marty and I went on. Started out as a lets take the kids on a sledding trip. Yeah sure, I wound up in the ER with a stretched achellis. Ouch...

That is a good area to drive the longing roads. Near Bonny Lake is a very well known place called Evan's Creek. Lots of Jeep 4x4 trails up there. Won't get me going through there in my truck.

4x areas

I haven't been up there in quite a few years - used to be a pretty good party spot. My son and I are fixing up a bronco for him when he turns 16 in April - have to go check it out. I doubt my "loggers limo" would make it vey far up there if there's any tight corners.

Harold Nesland 02-17-2010 12:06 AM

Haha If you take a left (facing easy presumably) instead of a right and follow the road, eventually it splits off into a dirt/gravel road, which then if you keep heading up the face of the mountain turns into quite the unforgivable mudslick :( I got stuck on something that you could say looked a little like this /\ , haha.

gallagher head lake near cle elum is a good spot to go wheeling to. you wont make it up there in a full sized truck (if your worried about scratches and such), but i made it up there in a stock tacoma and the bronco guys wouldnt have a problem :D

I both love and hate this quote. I don't like it because people don't know what a capable driver can do in a full sized truck, and I love the looks on their faces when they say "How the #$&%# did you get that up here?"

i hear what your saying. when we were headed up the ghalligar head lake we stopped at the ranger station. i had my 97 taco and my buddy was in his 05 dodge ram 1500 stock everything except he had 33" mud tires. the lady at the ranger station pointed at the toyota and said "that might make it" then she pointed at the ram and said "that wont". the toyota made it unharmed...the ram got a couple scratches and the rear bumper got mangled bottoming out on a rock.
on the way up there tho...we ran into some guys in a lifted bronco and a dirt bike....both kinda laughed

here's a picture

it was very beautiful up there. theres a primitive camp ground up there. couple benches, fire pit. the lake wasnt deep enough for the boat (at least in augest). we were planning on making a 3 day trip, spending an entire day up there, but decided to leave next day. we got no sleep that night, the wind was just houling though the trees, and the bugs were everywhere. it was worth it IMO...my gf will tell you something different:-X18

i should post more pictures of the place, i guess its not completly :-offtopic

Haha, aint it the truth though. As far as wheelin' places, theres not really trails, but there's tons of old decommissioned logging roads around my house in Glenwood, WA, as well as many that lead right up to Mt. Adams. The state is starting to actually gate them off though, so who knows how long they'll be open.

Here's some pictures of the kind of slop thats back there though. This is my buddy KC's 1996 F350 with 6" of lift and 35" BFG MTs, and this is some of the mild stuff, it gets way worse

Thinking about heading out there tomorrow, haven't gotton off road much but not stupid enough to get myself in a stupid situation...I hope haha. Seems like there are plenty of logging roads to fill my mind and empty my gas tank. I do have 4X4 however and in low she pulls like a beast. :9

Rock Candy Mountain/Capitol Forest. My buddies and I go down there quite a bit since it's really close to Ft. Lewis. There are tons of trails for atv's/dirt bikes and lots of places to get your truck stuck also. The view from the top is pretty great as well.

Driving directions: Take I-5 south from Tacoma. In Olympia, take hiway 101 north about 5 miles. Then take hiway 8 west about 4 miles. Look for a left turn into Rock Candy Mountain parking lot.

I live out in the Valley. I go up there every chance I get. Sadly that isn't as often as I'd like. I've been asking around for the last two years about the Dishman Mica ORV Park. People keep telling me about it but I cannot find it anywhere!! Dishman & Mica is practically right up the road from me, but despite my efforts and the numerous backroads through private properties, I can't find the darned place!

im2tall33 07-09-2010 05:36 PM

i have no idea where it is either..sorry..plus i dont have a 4x4 anymore right now either..=(

Capitol Forest kicks ass. The best thing about it, there's tons of things to do from stock vehicles to heavily modified!

I just took my stock Blazer up the switchbacks to the peak. Good stuff, except I thought I would come out somewhere else, and I ended up like 20 miles til I found my way out. I guess I don't remember the roads as well as I thought I did lol. I've been all over there on four wheelers and my F350, but I must have taken a wrong turn.

As for directions, if you get into capitol forest from one location you can pretty much get out anywhere. I usually go up through Littlerock, but there's roads by Straddleline/Rock Candy, or Oakville and Porter/Malone. When I was up a few days ago I came in at Rock Candy and came out in Malone.

And the view is amazing at the top. Definitely worth the trip.

CowboyBoots 07-10-2010 03:19 PM

It's not in Washington, but the funnest time I've ever had wheelin was in Elk River, Idaho. A little ATV town, no seatbelt law, and free-range to almost everything in the woods. I was in my 91 Bronco, the only truck in the entire town using the ATV trails for our own pleasure. Needless to say we pissed off a few people. So much mud, so little time.

Prozon 07-11-2010 01:41 AM

You say no seat belt law like that should attract people. Whats so terrible about wearing a seat belt? I probably would have broken my neck by now if I wasn't firmly attached to my seat.

CowboyBoots 07-11-2010 02:35 PM

Not entirely how I meant that. Just reminiscing to when I was younger. The rangers up there told us you didn't have to have a license to drive around in the park, either. Which was heaven for my buddy who had a suspended. Back then, no laws meant we were free to do whatever we wanted. Nowadays, after all I've done offroad, the seatbelt is the first thing I put on.

im2tall33 07-11-2010 08:37 PM

man i wear my seat blet when wheelin..lol..welli am also super close to the roof of any car or truck so hitting an unexpected bump of whole sends me throught the roof..lol...i actually put a dent in the roof of my old bronco from not whearing it..so it saves me a serious headache..lol..

CowboyBoots 07-12-2010 12:08 AM

Lol, something like that happened to me, too. In that same trip to Elk River, my buddy Dan was driving and decided he wanted to take us airborn. Mind you, I'm 6'2" and not wearing my seatbelt. My 91 got a good dent from my skull.

Prozon 07-12-2010 12:21 AM

Anytime i'm in a car I put my seat belt on. It's just a habit nowadays. When I was younger I never really wore it, but it's just instinct now. Getting thrown around a lot off road probably has a lot to do with it.

im2tall33 07-12-2010 10:48 AM

no doubt..ive cracked my neck and head too many times to not wear it..lol..i would much perfer a 4 point harness or something though..its a bit more stable.

klyne3 08-03-2010 11:59 PM

Not a member with you guys, but good wheeling can be found in Capital Forest near Oly, Tahuya State Forest near Belfair (easy trails), Evans Creek outside of Wilkeson (need a day/ weekend pass) and Elbe Hills just before Ashford. Elbe & Evan tend to be difficult depending on your set up but we wheel and take our quads to all of these places and have a great time.

Prozon 08-04-2010 01:15 AM

Well like I said, Capitol is plenty good.

I hear Elbe is better for quads/small rigs. From what i'm told full size rigs won't do well.
