1978/79 dana 60
 

is there a difference bewteen a 350 and 250 dana 60 in these years? thanks also if im doing a dana 44 to dana 60 do i want the ones with the kingpins or no? o and one more thing does high pinion have any difference to? thanks acually better yet just let me ask this question....to make this the most professional swap and easiest what exact axle am i looking for? thanks

f350's only had D60 front ends until 1999. from 80 to 86 F350s did not have D60's only D50TTB's. The only 78/79 f250's that had d60's were the sno-fighter package and they are hard to come by!

i suggest kingpin, by design they are stronger but some ppl will argue till the cows come home ball joints are just as strong

yes, hi pinion makes a big diff, only stick with hi-pinion (just dont buy a D60 from a pre 1978 truck and you will be good)

there are thousands of different axles to choose from and i have no idea what truck you are working on. not sure where to start except the info i have provided.

I don't beleive ford ever made a low-pinion dana 60. And I don't mean to be an ass, but actually f350 4x4's had the ttb from 1980 to february 1985. (so you could nesciscarily look for a d60 in an 80-86 body style, too) I'm assuming you meant 1979 and not 1999.....;)

1977 f350's had low pinion D60's... i had one and took it to the scrap yard:

74-75.5 Ford low pinion drivers side closed knuckle drum brake with 30 spline inners, 19 spline outers, small ujoints and weak knuckles.

75.5-77 Ford low pinion drivers side open knuckle disc brake 30 spline inners, 19 spline outers, outer knuckle spindle pilot hole is smaller than 78+ axle and is therefore notched to allow 1480 series U-joint tp pass through.

no D60 was put under 80-86 F250 or F350. here is a more detailed timeline copied and pasted straight from the site i mentioned above:

All these Ford versions were drivers side differential, reverse-cut (high pinion) gears, and kingpin knuckles to 1991.5 and balljoints thereafter. Most Ford D60s are internal style hubs, but external type lockout versions do exist. 2000 and later Ford D60s have balljoints, a metric wheel lug pattern of 8x170mm up to F350 and 8x220mm for F450/F550, different brakes and spindles, sealed "unit-bearing hubs", hub-centric wheels, different length axleshafts from the earlier D60s, and larger Superduty specific tie rod ends. From 2000 on, the Ford D60 front axle is also known as the Model 60F2000+ or the 248M. 248 just happens to be the equivalent in millimeters of 9.75" - the diameter of the D60s ring gear.
