All 6.4 Radiators are now covered for 5yr/100000 miles
For anyone that doesn't know Ford is now covering all 6.4 radiators for 5 years or 100000 miles which ever comes first. Per TSB 09-23-1 concerning repeat radiators leaks due to possible hyper extended thermostats. However, even if they don't replace the thermostats the radiators are still covered under this tsb because they use the thermostat basic part number as the part when submitting it for a warranty claim. And thermostats on these engines are covered by the diesel powertrain warranty. So for anyone who is trying to be boned by a dealer after 3/36 make sure to tell them to check this tsb. I have already fixed a couple this way.

Great info, thanks

A good Reminder!
For a complete run down of the TSB, see the link. Compliments of Cheezit: Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - View Single Post - Public Service Announcement Was re-reading the TSB and I know several of us have readers that can monitor coolant, eng oil temp and ECT's. If you pay attention to this paragraph, you may have an idea as to your own thermostats: With EOT at 195 °F (91 °C) drive on the highway unloaded at 55-70 MPH (89-113 Km/h) constant speed to observe EOT and ECT temp. Test results/next steps: If EOT is less than 8 °F (4.4 °C) higher than ECT, and the coolant temp fluctuates roughly 5 °F (2.7 °C) - the thermostats are okay and do not need to be replaced. Replace just the radiator. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03 (Engine Cooling). If EOT exceeds ECT by greater than 8 °F (4.4 °C) or if the ECT readings fluctuate 10 to 12 °F (5.55-6.66 °C) roughly every 30 seconds - replace both thermostats and radiator. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03 (Engine Cooling). If vehicle is not drivable and the coolant leak is found to be from the radiator, remove and replace both thermostats and radiator. Refer to WSM, Section 303-03 for both radiator and thermostat removal procedure and approved cooling system draining, filling and bleeding procedures. |
I found the TSB when I searched the TSB database, but didn't see where it states that the radiators are warranted for 100,000. Only that it applies to New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage. Is that what New Vehicle Limited Warranty means? I always thought that just referred to the original 3/36.

Great info, thanks for posting. Also, senix, thanks for the additional info on how to test.

Spoke with the shop manager at my dealer today, had him look up this TSB. He said that it is not necessarily possible to add the radiator to the job order when replacing the thermostats under this TSB procedure. He said that things can be squeeked through like this at times but it's not automatic.
Not trying to argue or kill the buzz here, just telling what I was told. |
Not to disagree with anyone but radiators are covered by that TSB, there is no squeaking through anything. The TSB is related to repeat radiator replacement, example if you have ever had a radiator replaced and require a second, third, etc this tsb applies. Below is a list of what the labor opp pays for, you either replace just the radiator or the radiator and thermostats, there is no labor opp for just replacing the thermostats. And once again they use the basic part number of thermostats for either repair and thermostats are covered 5 yr/100000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Warranty coverage limits/policies are not altered by a TSB. Warranty coverage limits are determined by the identified CAUSAL PART. Its not really open for interpretation other than that. I have already seen another dealer trying to stick it to a customer without running an oasis like every repair should have. They brought it to us instead and we got it fixed under warranty. Here are the labor opps: <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=3 border=1><TBODY><TR><TD class=NOBOTTOMBORDER align=left>092301A</TD><TD class=NOBOTTOMBORDER align=left>2008-2010 F-Super Duty 6.4L: Pressure Test Cooling System, Road Test, Monitor PIDS, Replace The Radiator (Do Not Use With Any Other Labor Operations)</TD><TD class=NOBOTTOMBORDER align=left>3.0 Hrs.</TD><TR><TD class=NOBORDER align=left>092301B</TD><TD class=NOBORDER align=left>2008-2010 F-Super Duty 6.4L: Pressure Test Cooling System, Road Test, Monitor PIDS, Replace The Radiator, And Thermostats (Do Not Use With Any Other Labor Operations)</TD><TD class=NOBORDER align=left>3.8 Hrs.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> Next time I get a 6.4 with high enough mileage I will post the parts coverage approval page with the basic part #8575 for thermostats and show that it is covered. Just had an old vin stored in my oasis. Here is an 2009 6.4 that I made the mileage 99000 miles and used the basic part number to check coverage and you can see on the last line what it says. Regarding your statement: "Just had an old vin stored in my oasis. " Perhaps I am misreading but the last line says 11400 lb. GVW. Is my radiator covered to 36,000 miles or 100,000? |

jboczar: I am going to print out this stuff and keep it with me when I go to have my 4th radiator installed. Hope you don't mind. If you do just let me know and I won't do it.
To further complicate things, here is my situation: '08 Job 1, 6.4 diesel. 124800 miles 4th radiator to be installed is sitting at the dealer I purchased the DieselCare Plus warranty making the engine covered to 200000 miles. Do you still think I can get my radiator replaced under some kind of warranty? My 3rd one was covered because I was under 100K and they managed to get it covered except I paid a $100 deductible. Thanks a lot for your time and info, really appreciate you doing this. |

As for the the $100 deductible you had to pay under the original warranty, as far as I know all diesels model year 2007 and later have no deductible any more. I will see if I can find the documentation to back that up. The 7yr/200000 mile diesel extended care does not cover thermostats sorry. It covers the other basic engine stuff but is not as comprehensive as the original warranty. |
What he is trying to point out is in BOLD LETTERS, it says that it is covered under diesel warranty

Ruschejj,
there is no deductible for 2008 6.4 trucks during the original powertrain warranty, if they were charging you $100 each time then they owe you your money back. This is taken from the 2008 warranty guide book, it looks a little funny because it was in chart form but towards the end of what I highlighted it shows no deductible for your truck. 2008 Model Cars and Light Trucks (Up To 550 Series excluding LCF) WARRANTY SUMMARY CHART 2 yrs 24,000 MILES 3 yrs 36,000 MILES 4 yrs 50,000 MILES 5 yrs 50,000 MILES 5 yrs 60,000 MILES 6 yrs 70,000 MILES 8 yrs 80,000 MILES COVERAGES (Coverage expires when time or mileage limit is reached) (MILEAGE EXCEPTIONS ARE INDICATED BELOW) No Deductible Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage • Ford/Mercury Vehicles (1) (2) (3) (4) • Lincoln Vehicles (1) (2) (3) (4) No Deductible No Deductible Powertrain Coverage • Ford/Mercury Vehicles • Lincoln Vehicles No Deductible Corrosion Perforation Unlimited Miles PowerstrokeŽ Diesel Engine 100,000 Miles No Deductible |
Thanks for the info. I repped you yesterday, can't do it again so "Thank You" will have to suffice. Much appreciated.
