2010 F-150 5.4 Max Tow Package
 

I have a 2010 F-150 XLT Supercab, 5.4, max tow package (integrated trailer tow brake etc.) Recently purchased a 29' Travel Trailer with a dry weight of 8800lbs. Truck pulls the trailer around here (nw ohio-flat land) just fine. Will the truck have any problems towing the trailer through the mountains? Want to take a trip to Maryland.
Anyone else out there have the same set up as I do?

What sort of gearing do you have in back?

I'm sure with that big of a trailer it'll lug a bit, and your mileage isn't going to be great either, but it'll handle it ok.

4x4 or 4x2?
if you have Max Trailer tow then you have a 3.73

It'll do fine. Fuel mileage will suck in the mountains, but it'll do it. I would recommend an aftermarket transmission temperature gauge just to make sure trans temps stay in the safe range.

I pull a trailer @ that heavy with my 04.

- Get heavier ply tires. I have 10 plys. Will help in so many ways.
- I change tranny oil more often than recommended. Why take a chance.

It will pull that trailer without any problems! I pulled a 8.5 foot by 20 foot enclosed trailer fully loaded througt the mountains of BC Canada, golden and revelstoke this summer without any problems. The trailer including everthing inside was approx 8000 pounds and we were never under 90 km/h. It handled it fine. I did notice that the truck would not down shift in drive when on steep hills and wanting to maintain speed until I manually put it in third! The engine was a screeming but I was pushing it hard. It was in the 35 degree C temp range outside and the truck did better then expected. The fuel mileage was good even though I was pushing it. You will do fine. BTW I have a screw king ranch 4x4 with max tow!

Max tow package comes with a 3.73.1 axle standard. The truck won't burn the mountains down but she'll do it fine and won't get hurt.

Your transmission service intervals are 100K miles for normal driving and 60K miles for severe duty. If your pulling that trailer a couple times per year, I'd recommend flushing more often than 60K miles.

The comment about 10 ply tires was spot on in my opinion.

You will be fine with your rig. Here in Maryland we really don't have "mountains" more like large hills but a lot of them. I pull my trailer at 8K and hay at 10K and never have any problems. Just make sure you use tow/haul mode. Chris

just because you have the trailer brake controller does not mean you have max trailer tow capabilities or the 3.73. I was just stating that so that you are sure of what you have.

This is the first large trailer i have pulled with any of my trucks and wanted to make sure I would be ok. Didnt want to get out there and not be able to climb a hill or have troubles. The truck is a 4X4 and does have 3.73. When i ordered it, i made sure it had the max tow package just for this very reason I know it says it can pull 11,200lbs with a weight dist. hitch, just wanted to make sure.

I have a 2009 F150 4x2 max trailer tow 3.73, 5.4 6.5' bed with integrated trailer brake controller, so a similar truck to yours. The first week of January I pulled my 31' Cardinal travel trailer which has a dry weight of 8080# from Longview Tex to Houston. My wife has equiped it pretty well with pots and pans and blenders and blankets and tvs and vcrs......well you get the picture. It probably pushes the 11,300# GVWr right to the limit. My truck handled it perfectly. I could not believe the difference from my 2004 F150!
That new 6 speed tranny really gives it some grunt off the line getting up to speed. And the trailer brake controller worked better than I could ever imagine. Bottom line, I used to be white knuckles all the way, but not anymore.
