to those with 12.5 wide tires on factory rims
 

i had a dealer refuse to order me a set of 325 65 18 tires cuz he says its unsafe to put a 12.5 tire on a 7 inch wide rim.
i know i can find another dealer who dont care about my well being and does care about cold hard cash
i know some of you have done just this. whats your thoughts? i cant see it as an safety issue but more of a ware issue.

im not paying 600 more bucks to buy 10 inch wide rims so i can worry about back spacing and ask another tire size question that has already asked a million times.

I work at a dealership and do most of the tire sales, I would refuse that job also. I would look around and find some wheels or buy a little smaller tire. Just my $0.02

if you have stock rims...they are 7.5" wide. not 7" wide. it's stamped on the inner lip of the rim.


if you have 20" factory rims, they are 8.5" wide.



have you considered a 305 width tire? you will run into a few less issues, and can get almost the same height

i have tryed ... it seems like nobody in my town carry a 33-34 12.5 with an 18 inch rim. 17's tons of options. 18's its 275 or 325. i can get a BFGKO in any size but im so over them.

Yrs ago I wanted the 33X12.50's on my old Ford with stock rims. The tire guy said I would have wear probs being that the beads would be pulled so far in, thus distorting the tire track. So I bought some wider rims, and that was that.

i bought and had my tires installed at Discount Tire..

I am currently running 35x12.5x17 discoverer stt's on my stock 17" rims on my f150. I have no wear problems or ride issues. Previously i was running 305x65x17 procomp extreme a/t's and didn't have any problems with them either.

no problems with safety? wear?

A 325/65-18 is recommended for use on at least a 9" -- 10" wide wheel. Just what the charts say. I know they'll fit narrower wheels (I have a aged 31/10.50-15 on a 6" wide wheel for a spare in my '77, but it bulges a lot, I wouldn't run it far.), but the'll bulge a lot.

Look close inside the front wheel well and see how close your stock 275/65-18 tire's (recommended for a 7.5" -- 9.5" rim) sidewall comes to things like spindle or frame both straight and turned. On your 7.5" rims, your tires are about 10.8" across at the widest point of the sidewalls. These bigger tires are nearly 2" wider at 12.79", though that's on a 9" rim. I'ld allow at least an inch on the inside though, to be safe. Also, that widest point will be further from the rim.

Know any buddies who work tire shop? Maybe have a 325/65-18 to try on that front end?

Also, your speedo will read only 55.5 at a true 60 mph.

my truck is factory with 275/65.

They don't bulge bad. At least mine don't. There is enough clearance as well. I got no wheel rub unless i have the wheels turned as far as they will go in either direction. Thats only because of the large tires and a leveling kit. When i had the 305/65's on they wouldn't rub at all. I just didn't like so much wheel well showing so i decided to go bigger the second time around.

i had 305 70 18 and had no tire issue at all

most tire shop won't install anything but oem size just because they don't want to deal with it

a 12.5" width is cool, but the rubbing would get annoying at times. you thought about a 11" or 11.5" width?

I personaly would order up a set of tires from Tirerack.com and avoid the local guys. The more I deal with local shops, the less I can stand them. I just paid $60 yesterday to get 2 tires mounted on my Mustang...They even charged me $20 to handle my "wide/low profile" 18 rims.


Tirerack has the sizes above in the Goodyear Silent Armor and the Duratrac...both are awesome tires

I have 35x12.5 on the stock 18 inch rim and i have had zero problems with them and they have only about 20% tread left on the tires.
