You can use Mercon V fluid with no problem.

Indeed. In the past it was necessary to run Type F in the power steering fluid reservoir, but the current brand of Mercon V is fully compatible with your system.

followup
Advance Auto Parts sold me their brand DEX 3/M and it states suitable for trannys requiring Dexron3 and Mercon..no V or 5 after the Mercon..so i guess its the wrong kind?? Shold it state Mercon V ??
And should this resevoir be topped off cold or warm ? Engine running or not?? thanks!!:) |
I keep mine between the min/max line when its is hot. About every other oil change I use a suction gun to remove as much as I can get out and top it off with fresh fluid. I am not sure but the recommended fluid may be regular Mercon But I prefer Mercon V because it is synthetic.

look in your owners manual it should say Mercon/atf

re
guess its ok to use what i got.. just Mercon
Good tip about sucking resevoir dry before refilling!!:):) |
+1 on removing some fluid from power steering at oil changes. I bought a turkey baster for $1.25 and i use that you can attach a hose to the end of the baster and get it down to the bottom of the pump to suck even more out.

My 06 5.4 4x4 says use Mercon V in the manual and on the top of the dip stick it says Mercon V make sure you don't mix the 2!!!

mixup
my man states mercon..no V after it..reads ok for power steering but mercon V for tranny required..now im wondering as i put in just mercon no mercon V
Nothings ever easy with newer trucks..gimme back my 86 f-150 4x4 anyday..$11,000 delivered:-D |
yeah it does say..
dont mix mercon and mercon V very boldly in my manual..i guess warning more for trannys than power steering..somebody posted above stating mixing the two was ok, as one was synthetic..(why do i hear a ching ching noise)
