engine swap
 

The engine on my 07' expedition seized up ( 5.4L ). No knocking noise or overheating, the exp. just shut down. The dealer said there was no oil in it so this wasn't covered by the extended warranty. I was just wondering what year(s) 5.4 short block I can use to swap. Hopefully the heads are still ok. Thanks.

If the engine was run tot he point that it seized without any oil in it, I would be very cautious about using the heads from that motor. Yank them and measure the surface with a good straight-edge but I'd be surprised if they weren't wrecked in one form or another.

The next question would be... How the heck did the engine end up without oil in it????

My niece was hauling horses. She sais the oil level was fine when she left and that the temp never went up.

I would fill it with oil and take it to another dealer. Sounds like they are trying to get out of it. I don't see how unless she ran over a rock and it punctured the oil pan, how all the oil would be gone.

the next closest dealer to me is 60 miles away, towing cost is gonna be a bunch. I have a 5.4 block from a 92' F-150; will this block work?

Oh, and there were no puncture marks anywhere.

I wouldn't worry about towing costs in compared to the cost of an engine. It should not have failed but it's your truck.

You would be better off with a complete engine assembly. Ford builds engines with much greater consistency than independent garages. A local junk yard can get you a low mileage 5.4 out of a wreck or look on ebay, sometimes they have deals on new crate engines.

Kind of odd, the whole thing. Your niece used your truck to haul horses but she stopped to check the oil before setting out?
I agree with the poster who suggested filling it with oil and taking it to another dealer, if they don't give you any relief, call your regional service rep and make some noise, you might get lucky. If all that fails, it's unlikely that motor is going to be serviceable with older parts, these things are pretty complicated.
You'll likely be best with either a crate motor or a salvage motor. Either way it's not going to be cheap, but unless the truck is trashed it's only 3 years old and certainly worth putting a fresh motor in.
Otherwise, detail it and sell it as is, somebody will fix it.

I think the point here is it's not your fault the motor died unless we don't have all the story. Collect your truck via tow truck, check the oil yourself. Fill it up and take it in to another dealer acting none the wiser.

Is it a Ford ESP warranty? Then you should have no problem. The engine could have thrown a rod and that is why the oil is gone, again, not your fault, covered by warranty. That dealer just doesnt want to pay-get another dealer. Tow it yourself if you have to-U haul rents car carriers.

motor swap wise, you can go 2 ways.


direct 100% swap = 2007/2008 F-150/Expy 5.4 3v motor

almost 100% swap, but have to change out a few things here n' there = 2004-2006 F-150, 2005-2006 Expy.



Ford used the same block and internals from 2004-2010 motors. What they changed though is the electronics and a few sensors. The motor in your Expy was introduced in 2004. So that is the oldest motor you can go out and find.


I highly suggest you pick up a nice Remanufactured block from Jasper Engines. Will run you about $3,000-4,000. But they come with a Warranty and Jasper does a good job of rebuilds.


As for visiting another Dealership, Ford uses a system called OASIS. The OASIS system is based upon the VIN # of the vehicle. If a Dealership does work on a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, they input the work into the OASIS system.


So if the Dealership is telling you that the Warranty is void...you can bet they have put that info into OASIS. The next Dealership will see this entry in OASIS and basically tell you to pack sand.

+1 on the Jasper engine. You beat me to the party. I've never seen a mod motor consume that amount of oil under any load. I think someone isn't telling the whole truth and I think the truck has been poorly maintained.

Sounds like it won't do me any good to go to another dealer, guess I'll just have to take this hit and go ahead n swap out the engine. Maybe my niece will help me?...Thanks for all the info.

the 92 f150 didn't have a 5.4 it had 3 engines a 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8 none of which are even close

and your heads will be trashed the cams and the journals are fried

are you sure she checked the oil level?
where do you get your oil changed at, did they put some back in?
when did you last change your oil?
has your truck been blowing smoke?
leaving oil spots?

Well said. And much more useful than "fill it up with oil and drag it 60 miles to another dealer" (on an overloaded U-haul carrier!) because Oasis will fess up, and the dealer 60 miles away won't appreciate being lied to. Honesty really is the best... and there's got to be a peice or two of honesty missing from what's already here.
