4.6L SOHC to 4.6L DOHC?

can i take a 4.6L DOHC out of a lincoln car and and put it in my 98 F150 which had the 4.6L SOHC? if so what all do i need to do it? thanks

Don't see why not. You will need the engine computers from the Lincoln to go with the engine.

MEFFORD 12-16-2009 06:46 PM

have you tried or heard of anyone doing it? i don't want to spend anymore money on this truck then i have i just want to get my truck back out and running its been down for 6 months needing a motor

No, I don't know anyone that has done this swap. I'm just saying that If the Lincoln engine runs and all components are there, then it is do-able.

ok thank you

It can be done, just requires some wiring harness mods and a retune.

BURNSTOUGHFORD 12-27-2009 02:47 AM

Are you sure that it needs a wiring harness?

MEFFORD 12-27-2009 04:22 PM

has anyone ever heard of anyone doing this?

I can help on this *is happy that knows something useful*

OK, with a Mark VIII engine you can just swap it right in and use all the existing wires and computers in the truck as long as its a V-8 truck. You will just need to retune the computer for the larger injectors, pump (need larger pump), MAF and t-body.
The DOHC 4.6 has an IRMC because the heads and plenum have dual runners to help create low RPM torque but at 3200 RPM they open to allow all 16 runners to supply air.
All you need to do is eaither get an IRMC delete kit or remove the butterflies and weld the holes that the shaft went through. The reason for this is because the stock computer can not controll them and to swap the Lincoln computer and harness over will be a major PITA.

Now this swap is easier with a Mark VIII motor or a Mach1 motor from a Mach that had the auto trans. 98-04 Cobras and 5-speed Mach1s had an 8 bolt crank which means you would need to have a flex plate made to hook to an auto trans.

Hope this helps.

I've done the swap in a coil on plug Mustang, I reused the 2V harness and PCM. In my case I had to lengthen all 8 coil wires, TPS wire, Fuel rail pressure sensor wire, and repin the alt. connector.
4V swap requires the 4V or Bullitt alternator, coolant hoses, thermostat housing and an inlet tube to accomodate the dual blade TB.
A retune is a must, A/F and timing tables are way out of whack otherwise.

I might be way off, but my 4.6l had a variable volume intake box below the intake runners. It would open up to allow more volume in the intake system with RPM. Couldnt that be used in the same way to control the runners onthe 4v motor? I be willing to bet it would open up around the same RPM's

thanks guys this is helpful.

IF YOU ARE TRYING TO SWAP A MARK ENGINE IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME,A CONTINENTAL ENGINE WONT WORK BECAUSE OF THE TRANS BOLT PATTERN.
