I sure wish I had that instead of the 4R100.

Amazing how far fords HD auto tranny has come in less than 10 years.

was reading that this am as well, sounds pretty good. I am concerned about the maint. interval but time will tell on that one.

I wonder if one of those could be retro fitted into other years?

I doubt it unless you are willing to spend the bucks to do it. It would be along the lines of trying to get a torqshift behind a 7.3, in fact, I would be willing to say it would be worse then that swap.

Great find, John!

They sure do a great job making my '08 look inadequate...

Excellent article, and the user comments are a gas to read too!

"Clean sheet" design? Hmm, I'm not sure that is reassuring. I was expecting an upgraded 5R110 with 6 gears. So now we have a new diesel, a new gasser, and a new tranny for 2011. How good are the odds that all three of those will be wildly successful? Too big a bite maybe?

Hang on, it's going to be a wild ride!

I'm certainly no metallurgist, but I can't imagine using anything but steel gears behind a diesel.

Powdered metal gears, anyone?

We shall see.......

I just hope that they're not doing something so fancy that it's not possible to machine replacement steel parts if necessary.

Powdered metal gears are steel. And they are forged, too.

Mark,

What are your thoughts on this new design?

So, their use has your unofficial "blessing"?

Powder metal is one thing, and can certainly be steel. But doesn't "Sinter Brazing" imply brass?

And isn't brass by nature a softer metal?

SpringerPop 12-09-2009 01:45 PM

..... and not as strong or durable?

EDIT: Cheeze! Are we back to being plagued with Double Posting again?

Sintering is a process used on many metals, not just brass. When properly executed, it's not a bad process. When improperly executed, it's a disaster waiting to happen.

Will follow with a description of the process if warranted. (edit: looks like they covered it anyway... :D )
