428 heads on a 390
 

Hello ya'll,

I am starting to plan my 75 F-150's 390 M rebuild. But, I am curious about putting 428 heads on it. What's the case for putting them on, or keeping the original 390 heads? Also, if I put on the 428 heads, am I most likely going to run into problems unforeseen problems or difficulties in the future, say with headers?

Sure, it's the vehicle engine vin code for the type of engine I have. I believe there are two different types of engines available (at least that's what they show at the local parts store), mine is the 4 barrel version or "M."

You need to post a casting number/part number. Same heads can be found on a plain ol' 428 and a plain ol' 390. Heads for a 427 are a different critter.

Standard 428 heads are the exact same piece as the 390 heads. If you are talking the 428CJ heads well then yes they will fit and provide a nice air flow increase. However the larger combustion chamber will lower your compression ratio some.

I have a problem with your "M" code. The books lists for "M" the

1962-63 390 3X2 rated at 401 hp and used a mechanical cam,

1966-67 410 used in the Mercury car line and

1969-71 351.

The only other time it shows up is for a 5.4 SOHC CNG.

VIN engine code M = 1974/76 F100/350 390 4V.

1974/76 were the only years that Ford offered a 4V on a 390 installed in an F100/350.

1968/76 F100/350 390 2V: The VIN engine code is an H.

The heads used on 1974/76 390's are not the same as 1968/70 390/428 heads with a casting number of C8AE-H.

1974/76 390 2V/4V head casting number prefixes could be D4TE, D5TE or D6TE...some of which depends on whether a smog pump is present...or not.

360 CID VIN Y OHV
390 CID VIN H OHV
390 CID VIN M OHV

More like D2TE-AA and only that casting for FE engines after 72 until 76.

I take that to mean you have a photo of the head castings in question? If not, then shut up. The problem with NumberDummy is his claim to 35 years of BOOK experience. For you and he and his other lackies to discount info from people who actually have HANDS-ON experience is spectacularly ignorant.

Oh and I was actually alive before there was an FE engine. I remember the introduction of the much proclaimed 352 in 1957, well late 1957 when the 1958 line was premiered. Having been a professional mechanic and a racer, who only ran Ford products, I would suspect that I along with many others here (that would include Numbers Dummy) have forgotten more about Fords than you will ever know. So go put a sock in it until you have enough years at this to not still be in diapers.

You and the Dummy seem to have forgotten that old people like you get Alzheimer's, which pretty much throws your "I remember when" nonsense out the window.

Now, didn't I tell you to shut up unless you have proof? With the shear amount of late 60's trucks made, there must be a bunch of the D4, D5, and D6 heads on eBay.
