New 7.3!!

Don't know if this is a rumor or not but I heard through a diesel mechanic that Ford was bringing back the 7.3 PSD. Is this true?

tex25025 09-28-2009 10:55 AM

I don't know why they would do that when they are spending money getting the 6.7 ready for market.

I kind of doubt that. 7.3 is a great engine IMO but it was not designed to meet the emissions requirements of the future.

Or the past...............not 2004, not 2007 and certainly not 2010.

Also the 7.3 was a Navistar International engine, its no longer in production and in a few short months Navistars engine supply agreement for Ford North American engines will come to its conclusion.

pipe dream is all it is. Besides you cannot get the power out of that motor in its current design, and deal with the emissions which choke the motor.

Lubbockguy1979 09-28-2009 04:24 PM

A new 7.3 with emissions would never be close to the old 7.3..... It would throw the reliabilty out the window. Now at some point they could design a motor that has the same displacement.

Guess mechanic was blowing smoke up my asssprin! Seems they would have to make some mods w/emissions and other stuff and bring it back, instead of producing these POS diesels since then. Ford will have come out with three different designs since it went out of prod.

tjc transport 09-29-2009 05:43 AM

no, international came out with 3 different engines after the 7.3
ford has only one engine design for our trucks, the new 6.7.

tex25025 09-29-2009 07:06 AM

Where are y'all getting 3 engines after the 7.3? I'm only remembering 2: 6.0 and 6.4.

Some of the 6.0s had their issues, I won't deny that, but the 6.4 actually hasn't been that bad of a truck from what I've seen, heard, and read. Biggest complaint is emissions and the resultant mileage drop, but that's to be blamed on big brother, International(or Ford) have little control over that at this point, big brother won't even let them get used to one piece of equipment to improve it's efficiency.

I would also mention that I don't think my 6.0 is a piece of "crap" either. While mine has had it's issues, there isn't one that I couldn't blame on my own ignorance at the time that I started doing mods(as is the case with quite a lot of people I'm sure with regard to the 6.0).

longhorns13 09-29-2009 07:33 AM

Didn't mean to dog the other diesels, just don't like all the quick changing in motors. Showing a little frustration.

Take the entire EGR system, variable pitch turbo, and closed crankcase vent system off the 6.0 and you would be having warm fuzzies about it also.
Take the DPF off and correct the radiator issues on the 6.4 and its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Add all that stuff to a 7.3, try to make it fit the confines of a Ford light truck engine compartment, as well as cost competitive in its class and it becomes a gutless boat anchor POS.

some of us are old fashioned, and consider the 7.3 IDI the real winner engine.
so that gives you the 7.3 powerstroke, the 6.0, and the 6.4.

The OP posted the return of the 7.3 PSD though, which is after the IDI.

I would also imagine, considering the benefits of DI over IDI, that the 7.3 PSD has alot more chance of coming back to the market place then the 7.3 IDI(although I highly doubt either one will ever come back in the this sector of the truck market). If the 7.3 PSD would be an engine anchor with all the emissions imagine what the IDI would be like.

Just in from a diesel semimar at ford dealership. 6.7L next engine out. All new engines designed only to meet newest emmissions standards. As everyone knows the Feds are tightening the requirements. ford rep says 6.7L won't dirty a white cloth in front of exhaust pipe!
