vermont dirt road wander

Anyone want to head into National Forest this week?

Opening of grouse is tomorrow, still plenty thick for shooting , but I thought I'd use it as an excuse to make a tour of the roads and start setting my trapping poles out for fisher.

My normal fisher line in Vermont is 185 miles by truck but alot of the NF roads are now gated and closed, so it's 100 miles of truck and about 10 on foot, and I've had to just do away with the rest, or at least not run it everyday for the whole season.

there are an additional 30 miles total of roads that I'd rather not run alone, I've torn tires out on them before and my Kevlars that were due in today were not in the truck delivery, if anyone wants to go hunting, fishing, sightseeing, moose gawking let me know I'm always looking for someone to help change a tire!
HA!

good trout fishing all along the way, plenty spots for pinics, coffee stops, grouse spots, and always the chance of bears and moose and other critters being spotted.

F-250 Super Duty only roads are the main routes, but I've snuck F150 4x4s on them in the past.

Hey slick...now that you're over the 25 post thresh hold...how about creating a signature with your first name in it so we know who we're hollering at???

Good to have you on the boards!!!

slickrock01 09-25-2009 11:37 PM

well, that explains it, I tried figuring out how to do that and couldn't find a way to add a signature, now I know its by posts!

Pretty good wander!

did some fishing, got half my leaning poles out, saw some game, we had a very nice shore lunch and the truck didn't get any damage...good day!

Yeah...it's tied to post count...I believe to prevent spammers.

Go to User CP...scroll down to Edit Signature...and...from there any dummy can figure it out!!! At least...I was able to do it!!! :-missingt

What part of VT are you from? The only places I have spent alot of time are Island Pond (snowmobiling) and Arlington (camping)

slickrock01 09-28-2009 03:44 PM

searsburg, about 12 miles from arlington, the whole state is so small it's pretty easy to cover the whole thing in a day.

i shot a moose up past island pond a few years ago, so did a couple of my buddies, another has a tag this year so will be there again.

I like to stay on the dirt roads if I can, the highways are boring.

back in teh 70s it was easy to stay on dirt all weekend, but now they pave so much its hard ot stay on dirt even all day, but we give it a go!

come join us sometime, we can swing by camping on the battenkill and get you, i would guess thats the campground you use? only one i know of other than national forest sites.

weds my camper is being winterized , hate to cut the season short but lots of seasons kicking in now, I'm afraid if I dont do it now I'll be running to get it done!

Yes! Camping on the Battenkill. I love that area! My fiancee loves it also. I used my camper for the last time, last weekend I think, and that was for the races in Jersey.

I met a young fella lives in the national forest, has a piece of land his family refused to give up right smack in the middle after the fed came in and made the NF, hard to get to but he got me going on the backroads in vermont, I would say were it not for him and his friends I never would have moved to vermont when I retired.

theres more to the story but I wont bore everyone on here with that, but they also are the reason we go back to utah too, my wife left when they paved rt 12 and didnt ever plan on going back, but they make it fun!

short story, they were leading us down a utah road and the bank gave way, he rolled the truck, they got out, his wife started looking around and says to my wife, " what we need is some flat rocks and a place to hook a cable" and he holds his coffe cup up, now keep in mind he just crawled out of his upside down truck, and he holds his coffee up and smiles and yells, " never spilled a drop! I love these cups!"

I tell you they are fun folks to do a wander with, can get expensive, but fun!
