Opinion on tires
 

My new truck (06 f350 crew cab, short bed, 4x4, 6.0L) is going to need tires soon. What do you have on your truck and how to you like them? Looking for an all season that will make it over the pass in the winter.

I run Toyo Open Country A/T's on my Bronco. They do well for me, and clean out pretty well considering they are an all terrain tire.

My Dad's had Les Schwab Mud Terrain SXT's, Toyo M-55's, and is now running Cooper Discoverer ATR's on his '00 F250 now since it's no longer a farm truck.

The SXT's did good in the snow and mud but sucked in the rain and provided no forward momentum if you were on ice. The M-55's were just as good in mud and snow, better in the rain, and weren't as noisy. Pretty much a better all around tire than the SXT and didn't wear out as quickly.

Both the SXTs and M-55s were M+S rated so they are considered a "traction device" when travelling the pass. Doesn't mean you won't have to chain up though.

He just picked up the ATRs a couple months ago and is happy with them so far. He gets better fuel mileage, they ride nicer and are much quieter. Don't know how they do in foul weather yet, but will find out soon enough!

Running Cooper discoverer ATR 315/75R 16's have all my tires siped at the dealer for the ice, and cooler tread temps. Have ran toyo's and wildcats, all Les Scwab brands and like the Cooper better. Traction seems to be great, travel in sand and on ice and snow. havn't chained up yet , and I like to see how far I can get in 2 wheel drive before engaging the 4 wheel drive.

Currently using Toyo MT's 35x12.50x18. My only issues with them is they are a soft rubber. burn off way to easy and they don't clean out as fast as I think they should. Snow or Mud. I am also starting to look around for new, but my next set will be 37x13.50x18...yep, going bigger. No more camper to haul so why not. Looking at a set of Khumho's I've heard good things, they are directional...meaning only rotate tires in one direction...forward.

I've had a lot of tires and have to disagree the TOYO M/Ts are the best mud terrain I've ran that isn't a extra expensive special order tire. From any dealership I recommend the toyo's. Got the A/T on the wifes ride. Seem to have the same or more in my opinion on traction that coopers, but the biggest thing is they last me forever. I put 120k miles on my toyo M/Ts and had minimal tread left 1/4". Just seem to last forever. Plus they look way better than coopers. I'm not much for tire style but the Toyos are attractive. I do rotate and balance my M/T every 10k. and 25k on the A/Ts and seems to do it for me. I like to rotate the M/T often. One time I waited a while and when they were rotated it was like flying a matress down the freeway with my 6" lift and 37.5" toyo M/T's

Which are quieter on the road? I was thinking of the toyo A/T's to keep the road noise down. If the M/T's are quiet on the road I would certainly consider those.

Anyone else. Is anyone running the WildCountry tires? Les Scwab used to sell them not sure if they still do or not.

a friend used to run dick cepek fun country tires on his truck...they were quiet, great in the mud and snow, too

I do not know if they come in an E series though.

Thanks for the links. I have been reading up on it and have checked out other forums. I simply posted here to get a more local opinion.

Chuck, one more thing to add. My buddy has a set of 285/75/16 Maxxis Bighorns on his 3/4 ton Ram and likes them. He is now able to pull a 22 foot, 3600 lb. flatbed trailer through the marshy part of his property where he wasn't able to do so before with his BFG A/T's. I rode with him one day when we were taking some 4x18x20' beams to the site where he's putting up his pole barn. Just stuck her in 4-hi and put it to the wood. They were throwing half-fist-sized clumps of muck about 20' straight up in the air. I'm sold. He says the only thing that he doesn't like is that they whine and howl on the highway, but it's tolerable for a mud terrain.

Thanks for the update. I am much more concerned with snow and ice than with mud but the more information I get the better.
