'08 expedition transmission lines
 

I am trying to install the HD cooling transmission cooler on our 08 expy, and it has some sort of compression fitting that I can't figure out how to get off. It is sort of like the fuel filter or air conditioning fittings, but the tool for that application won't work. What I need to do is unplug the original lines in order to plug the new ones in. Is this a special tool that I need, or does anyone have an idea of how to get them loose?

Of course then I have another problem, which is that the transmission doesn't have a dipstick. So how do I get more fluid in it? Thanks.

Search through the last week of posts our trannys do have a stick and it is in the nut on the fill pipe. Sorry can't give more info baby crying.

Thanks for the info on the fill plug, I will check into that. I probably wasn't very clear on the other issue, let me elaborate. The HD cooling/HD tow kit comes with a trans cooler that is just an auxiliary cooler that goes inline after the main trans cooler. To install it, there is the cooler (of course), and 2 lines that must be replaced. The main trans lines go from the tranny up under the radiator, and then there are these compression fittings that I am talking about. If I could figure out how to disconnect the lines I could plug the new one in right there, and then I would just have to connect the inlet hose on the cooler to the outlet of the main trans cooler. Hopefully someone who has done this knows what I am talking about. I know I saw on here a while back that someone installed the HD cooling options on a non-HD cooling expy. Thanks

The transmission lines on the 07+ expedition require a special line release tool that we have in the shop, it's a ford special tool. It's similar to a fuel line and a/c line, but not quite the same. You may want to search online or on ebay for the tool, it's plastic and small so it shouldn't be that expensive. If im not mistaken the same tool is used for the 06+ explorer's. Or if you have a local Ford dealer you may even be able to "rent" it from one of the tech's if they are nice enough. As for there being no dipstick, the 07+ expedition have a "sealed system" there is a mini dipstick is located on the right side of the transmission, it's yellow and about 4 incles long and easily accessed when the vehicle is over your head. when the dipstick is removed that serves as the port to fill / top off the transmissionit's kind of a pain don't really know what the adventage is but hope the information helps you out a little

I am not sure if I am supposed to be putting the tool into the fitting, or just pressing down the flared part around the tube. Can you describe how it is released? Thanks

You can buy them at any parts store... Meteal or plastic, the tool is cheap

Keep in mind... you can put the cooler in either position. If you are in the souther states it really doesnt matter, before the radiator reduces the heat in the radiator, and in cold enviroments will act as a preheater as to not over cool the tranny

Sorry for the delayed response rod I just relocated to texas (and I'm proud to say that my 07 expedition pulled my 18' cargo trailer 1900 miles weighing just over 6000 lbs fully loaded with no problem.. I wwas beyond impressed with the factory brakes they were superb showing no signs of fade or fatigue the whole trip!) and had no access to a computer.. Those fittings in the link you have are similiar but not exactly whatt you need. The 07 and newer expeditions require a tol just like that but slightly "longer" to release the clamp fitting on the line. All you have to do is unclip the tool, put it around the line, and slide the tool down into the line fitting to release the clamp so you can pull the lines apart.
