Locate Vin Number on 1965 Ford

I recently bought a 1965 Ford F100 stepside and I am having a little issue getting a clear title on it. The VIN in the registration is F10DD709096 which I understand is for a 1970 F100 though the truck is definitely a 65. The door vin is for 65 with F10DK650880. I am trying to locate the vin on the frame and I understand it is near the front cross member on the passenger side, but have been unable to locate that vin. Problem is I crossed state lines with it and have to do a vin inspection on it but the numbers are not matching.

Welcome to FTE

Someone replaced the original left door due to damage with a used door.

Didn't pay attention, or forgot to install the correct Warranty Plate on the replaced door.

This is typical, and is somewhat common to see on 1963/80 trucks.

F10DD709096.

F10 = F100 2WD

D = 352 2V

D = Dallas TX Assembly Plant

709096 = 1965 - assembled in July 1965.
---------------------------------------
F10DK650880

F10 = F100 2WD

D = 352 2V

K = Kansas City Assembly Plant

650880 = 1965 - assembled in February 1965.
---------------------------------------------
The D VIN engine code was only used one year for the 352 2V: 1965.

1966/67 F100/350: Y is the VIN engine code for the 352 2V.

1965 serial number range: 580,001 thru 732,000.

Look on the top of the right (passenger) side frame rail for the VIN.

It could be just in front of the cab, or partially hidden under the cab.

VIN decode information source: 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog.

To add to what Bill said. That number is on the top of the passenger side in two places. Usually found just ahead of where the axle crosses under and again under the cab.

It can be hard to dig out at times, but it is there. You may have to use a putty knife, sand paper, what ever to find it.

Thanks I found it with lots of sandpaper and hard work! The vin number on the frame matches the title, which is great news.

where did you find it...under cab or in front of engine crossmember on RH frame rail ??

I found it before the engine cross member on top of the frame. I looked but never found the one under the cab. I do not think my tag lady is going to enjoy verifying it, but it is there and all cleaned up. I just want to say thank you for everyone that offered input, this forum is awesome for quick and accurate responses. Hopefully I get more time in the near future to really start working on the truck.

LOL...If she complains about getting dirty looking for a VIN then she shouldnt be doing that kind of work..all you should have to do is press the fender apron out of the way a lil bit to make it clearly visible..

The sandpaper on the frame is where I found my VIN on my 66. Note that the front VIN is behind the crossmember where most folks have found theirs in front of the crossmember

thanks, carras! ill hunt in those areas today then, made my work alot easier! looks like youve installed spring buckets and the "scissor" arms from a new ford truck here, mind ifn i ask what ya used? and does that setup give you the disk/power brakes? i really wanna keep my frame, but its gonna need alot of upgrades to hold my 460 in check, with big engines, comes even bigger need to stop it! lol

Confederate Diesel 06-08-2011 11:01 AM

Stumpy: Those "scissor arms" are the Twin I-Beam suspension that came stock on all '65 - '79 F-100, F-150 and F-250 trucks.
They did not come on '61 - '64 trucks such as your '63. Your '63 has a solid front axle.
Be aware that although all '61 - '66 trucks look alike, there is almost nothing interchangeable between pre-'65 trucks and '65 - '79 trucks.
The front suspension, complete steering system, complete front brake system, cab, frame and engines are completely different.
This is important for your research into upgrades such as disc brakes, power steering and a 460 transplant.
You will discover a great deal of detail how to upgrade from a '70s donor truck, but this will unfortunately not apply to your '63.
The upside to this is that there is a lot of good detail how to do improvements such as a Crown Vic front suspension swap, that will give you these upgrades.
Good luck on your project, and keep us all posted on your progress.

Conf D is correct. Twin I Beams are stock for my 66. I do have later model spindles that will allow me to install disc brakes, but they are not installed yet. Glad I saved you some work.

I had intended a rolling resto until I couldn't find the VIN in front of the crossmember (Note many have found theirs in front). So I decided to lift the cab to read the one under the cab. Well, once the cab was unbolted, I decided to clean up the frame. Once the frame was cleaned up ... Well you get the idea. Good luck with yours.
