Engine ID ???
 

Hi Folks,
I had this up on the '48 to '60 forum and a member suggested bringing this over here. For the past week I have been dissassembling the red '53 I have on my site, CLICK HERE to see engine. Somewhere along the life span of this old girl, the original owner I'm told decided to up-grade to the Y-Block V-8. I have no idea what year or if it came from a car or truck. I did notice that it has threaded holes in the side of the block for side mounts even though it is front mounted. I would like to know some way of identifying the engine in regards to year and displacement.

I have the entire front body assembly, radiator and radiator support removed. I pulled the plugs and filled the cylinders with diesel fuel. I was able to use a crow bar in the spokes of the front crank pulley to turn the engine over. I have it turning easy enough to spin it with the starter. I tried the starter but the Bendix gear was bound up so I had to take it off to free up the mechanism. As soon as I get that back on the starter I will put it back on and spin up the engine for a while with the plugs out. The oil is dark but there doesn't seem to be any crap in it. There was antifreeze in the block so I doubt it is cracked or damaged. I was surprised when I pulled the plugs to find they were not clogged up with a lot of deposit. They looked as if it had been running good when they parked it. The plate on the front is 30 years old so I have to assume that was when it was last running.

The engine has been under the hood, the radiator was hooked up, had collant in it and the air cleaner was on it also. There has been no way for stuff to get into the engine. I think if I work on the ignition I can get it running.

I don't have any need for this engine but if it will run I want to sell it or trade it for body parts. It is hooked up to a good T-98 4speed tranny that I will sell or trade with it or seperately. If I can identify the engine more specifically beyond just being a Y-block I am sure it will help to sell or trade it.

Safe to rule out 292 and 312 since those would have had Thunderbird decals on the valve covers (not to mention the 292 and 312 were used in 55 I think was the first year).

I would have to say no bigger than a 272 engine as far as displacement goes.

As suggested in an earlier post, I found a casting number on the intake behind the carb which was ECG 9425 B .

I will look for more numbers if I can get the crud off to see them. As for the valve cover decals, there is hardly anything left of them to the point where it is hard to tell what they were.

I got the starter back on and whirled ithe engine without the plugs and squirted more oil in in the cylinders while it was turning.

I am now rigging some ignition parts to get a spark going. When I do I wil try a shot of starting fluid to se if it will even light off. If it does I'll. get the carb working and try some gas in it.

I will post this in here so there wont be any confusion but the block casting number indicates the engine as a 292 from 58 - 59 used in cars and trucks to April of 59 but the code also was used on 312 Y8`s used in mercurys.

Dave, go to this site and take a good look at engine and head ID... FORD Y . It appears that you have a pre 57 engine, but beyond that is unknown. Could be anything from 239 to 312. The block casting number will help narrow it down.

46yblock, he posted the block casting number in the truck forum and I answered there I just posted the answer here.

His block casting number located on the driverside above the oil filter is this.

EDB 6015 E which is 292 Y8 in 58 - 59 cars and trucks to April59 and 312 Y8 in Mercury.

His intake manifold (I dont got codes on that)

ECZ 9425 B

Now this is just speculation but mine (on a 56 292 Y8 4V) is ECZ 9425 A so the B I am thinking is for a 2V model since thats what his appears to be.

What threw me though is I saw yellow paint and I remember in a previous post here that the 272`s were painted yellow. He said the bottom end is yellow while the top end was red if I understand correctly. But I also know that different years were different colors so maybe the yellow was a 292 truck engine in 58-59 since the 292 and 312 was replaced in the Tbird and they were no longer known as the Thunderbird Y8 or the Thunderbird Special Y8.

The ECZ 9425 B manifold is the '57 up four barrel manifold that accepts the modern base Holleys. It's the most desirable of stock Ford four barrel manifolds.

Oops, never mind, I see it's a ECG not ECZ. I got confused when Rusty mentioned ECZ 9425 B. ECG early two barrel manifold with a Holley 94 on it.

It is ECG 9425 B, not ECZ 9425 B and it's a two barrel manifold.

Yes I caught that after I posted, Rusty stated you had a ECZ 9425 B manifold. Then I looked at your pictures. See my correction above. Perhaps next time I'll just stay out of it...

I made a mistake, I was looking at my manifold cause I was too lazy to go back to the other post to copy the code he said I know it was simmilar but just a B at the end instead of A like mine.

But it was ECG though I was thinking ECZ on mine and I just typed that out for his too.

Yep, he had a thread going in there since its a 53 truck as well as in here. I thought it was a 272 from the yellow I saw and the fact that it didnt say Thunderbird on the valvecover wich would tell me 292/312 but assumptions like that usually arent right cause his was a later swap.
