another VO Road trip!! GA to FL

Here we go again! This time for fun though. Me and my boys (5 & 8 yrs old) are going to a hydrofoil water ski (Sky Ski/Air Chair) event in Lake Placid, FL next weekend. We'll be trucking down I-75 from almost TN to Valdosta on Wed. afternoon. Then thurs AM we are going to Tampa to visit some fambly. Thurs PM we're going to Sebring/Lake Placid for the 8th annual Florida Fly-In!! On sun, we'll head home up US 27 to I-75 all the way back to N. GA.

We should have plenty of grease, but always enjoy meeting other VO'ers - so if you are along our path, drop me a line and hopefully we can stop by!

Here's a pic of a hydrofoiler friend doing an extreme move. "Ball and Chain" is what Geno Yauchler calls his (wrapped) backflip/360*/helicopter manuver! This is at a FL Fly-In a few years ago...

(I think this pic was done by Ian Lauder??)

I don't know who Geno Yauchler or Ian Lauder are....but it sounds like a fun trip.

Out of curiosity. What kind of fuel economy do you get with an F5, single shots, and grease?

We had a blast! I guess those guys are popular in a pretty isolated world, I just like to give credit to talent like that when I can! Trust me, that is an impressive move - huge skills required.

Well, to be honest, it has been a LONG time since I measured the gallons of fuel I put in my truck. Typically, only a small difference between VO and diesel. The VO has a little less energy than diesel, but there are other factors that ultimately limit mpg's we can get. We did aout 1400 miles this trip and used about 5 gals of diesel at most (and like 2500 miles since last diesel fill-up!). I estimate my empty mpg's are about 15 mpg driving like I want to - surely higher if I slowed down and TRIED to get more. I did have a couple hundred miles last year where I ran out of grease and actually bought diesel. I was towing 10klb 5ver like I stole it through the Rockies from Montana to Colorado. I got 11.5 mpg. I think thats a little better than it was stock, but I could never go back - I like the POWER! :-headbang

FWIW, I've put almost 180k miles on this truck - last 40k w/singles. Since my right foot is not connected to my wallet anymore, my mpg's likely suffer. I always joke 'they never clock you going UP the mountain!'. I love embarrasing those dodges and chebys. :-jammin

:-missingt Love it. Anything special about your tuning, or are you running the off the shelf programs?

No live tuning yet... Jody did write these 'for my truck', because he didn't have tunes for my pcm code and 6spd or something like that. There was a minor issue that I had to go back and get fixed after getting SS tunes, which did give me the oppurtunity to massage them a little (I had him take some fuel out for less smoke). He was aware of the VO conversion, but not sure he was doing anything different for it at that time.

I have hi-idle, 40tow hi-altitude, 60tow, 80econo, 100hp. Had to add the hi-altitude tune for towing the 5ver out west...
