6.0 vs 7.3

Ok I have a 1997 F250 with the old 7.3 in it. I want to buy a new ford diesel but i havent heard to much good things on the 6.0 so i figured i would talk to the people that have them and want to see what years of 6.0 is the best to go with. I want it for pulling looking for a 350 dually. Any help would be nice.

I have both a 1997 7.3L and a 2006 6.0L. Love them both. I drive the 6.0L - it is a great truck (son drives the 7.3L). Personally, I would recommend an 06 or an 07. Many have had good experiences with other year models, but getting one w/ warranty left is a huge advantage. If you do get a 6.0L, just read up on the proper maintenance things and it should put a smile on your face. When you see a truck you like, get an OASIS report on it. That will tell you its warranty repair history.

Oh yeah - the 6.0L runs circles around my 7.3L

I would go with the 05-07 trucks. The later 06's and all 07's had commonization in some of the parts. The 05-07's have proved to very reliable. With a few mods you can make them even better. Hopefully Bismic chimes in with one of his "lists" on what to look for.

The 6.0's have gotten a bad rap, mostly I feel, due to the techs not diagnosing them in the first few years. My 06 has only been in the shop 4 times in almost 56k. The key to these trucks is maintence. Quality fluids and filters, fuel additive, and frequent maintence and you should be ok.

With that said it is a machine so dont hate me if you bet one and it has issues. Your best bet would be to shop around, find one, and get an Oasis, if its clean, the truck is clean, and passes all your ispections and it fits the bill...well you know what comes next.

Good Luck and Dont Rule Out the 6.0 as a Hard Working Powerful Engine. Oh yeah it will run circles around your 7.3

I'll agree with bismic and Sarge here. My '05 has been an excellent truck and powertrain wise it's been trouble free. Ditto on the OASIS report. Also, for your viewing pleasure, I've included a link to a fantastic checklist from bismic in another post. Look down the page to post #12 and you'll find it. Good luck and don't rule out the 6.0. There have been some horror stories but I agree with Sarge in that a lot of times there were poorly trained techs just throwing parts at them instead of actually correctly diagnosing and repairing problems. There are also many very happy owners out there driving these trucks every day without any issues.

Stay religious about your maintenance and if you can find one that has warranty left or is eligible for an extended warranty, all the better.

I had to mess w/ you a little - I saw I edged you a little and had to add the "running circles" line before you did }>

Thanks,

I thought I was getting faster, but I gues I still need to step up my game.

Only problem Iv'e had with my 05 is 1 turbo under warranty and bedplate leak. Had it back in 3 1/2 days on the bedplate and same day on the turbo. I am happy with the truck. Had it since new and it is stock except for items listed in my sig.

I liked the 6.0 in the 350 so much that I found an used 03 Ex with 100000 miles on it for the wife :-X22
