302 Crankcase Ventilation

I have a newly acquired 1993 F150 with a 302 V8, which is probably not the original. On the passenger side valve cover, there is a grommet for a PCV valve, but nothing there at all (just an open hole). On the driver's side, there is is a hose coming from the oil fill tube into the large K&N air intake duct.

I am getting an oil-burn smell in the cab, and I think it is the blow-by coming out of the open hole in the passenger side valve cover. My question is, can I just plug the hole on the passenger side valve cover? Will the driver's side vent into the K&N provide all the necessary ventilation for the crankcase, or do I need to install a PCV on the passenger side? If I need a PCV, then where do I route the hose to?

Thanks, guys!

Yes you need a PVC valve in the passenger side cover, route it to the vacuum tree with a long piece of tubing. Originally it would have connected to the lower back corner of the upper intake but this is a bad location and creates it's own problems, cap this hole if it's not already.

Did as you you suggested. Worked out great. Thanks for the reply!

A couple years ago my crankcase ventilation was creating a like oil blow-by problem were as the vent tube coming out of the drivers valve cover that connects to the air filter box at the filter was emitting oil over into the filter box. I change the pcv valve and thought that would solve it. It did'nt. Had a thread here asking what could be wrong. Reply was the motor most likely was having blow-by and probably needed to figure on replacing the rings.
I looked into it farther later on and what I found was the vac hose from the pcv valve to the ell fitting was plugged with carbon, and going further I found the metal tube/fitting was plugged as well as the "intake hole where the fitting threads into. I cleaned out the carbon from the lines and manifold and my oil "blow-by" problem ended, period.
I wished I had posted this back then for others may have had the same problem and did not find this.
