It was funny, I drove the truck to "0 mile until empty" and my friend chickened out, wouldn't let me keep going, I told her there's FIVE more gallons in there but I lost that argument. So I stopped and filled up. After filling up, it said 354 mile until empty. Well all I was doing was city driving now, and I swear I hadn't drove 15 miles around town and I looked at it again and it said 300 miles until empty.

I wonder if the computer actually said to itself OH **** He's not on the interstate anymore!!! LOL

Question for all you Ford Guroos.......If I get a "chip" will it increase the fuel mileage by chance?

Ken03KBGTvert 08-23-2009 06:04 PM

I PM'd the 5Star guy on here that does tunes and asked him several questions including that.

Here's his response to that part of my PM...

"Economy wise no more than 1-2 mpgs can be expected."

Ford is VERY picky about any kind of tuning on the diesels. If you have to take it in for warranty work, make sure the tune you have can be removed and not leave any trace behind. You will probably never get more than 15 MPG highway with a stock tuned 6.4.

On a side note, I drove from South Padre Island to New Braunfels (315 miles) on 26 gallons of gas Friday. Most of my driving was at 70-80 MPH. That's just a little over 12 MPG. Not too bad, I think.

Tankboot 08-23-2009 07:31 PM

15 MPG would be a very good improvement over 12 mpg.....We went to Corpus yesterday and back, and the fuel mileage hovered around 12.1 constant. I'm not impressed at all. In 1997 I purchased a F-350 Dually 7.3 L power stroke 4-door, and it got 17-20 MPG right off the lot, so I'm not sure why with all the new technology, we are DECREASING fuel economy....

In 1992 I bought a non-turbo Ford Diesel Dually, and I was regularly getting 22-23 MPG, non turbo again......WTH?

JKBrad 08-23-2009 07:59 PM

It's the EPA's new emissions standards. The '08 and up trucks required ultra low sulfur diesel and the diesel particulte filter. The system "regens" by dumping lots of fuel into the sytem to burn the soot out of the filter. I don't see how the emissions per gallon burned could be any better than what the limits were before.

Check out the 6.4 forum. some guys are claiming 18 MPG with the DPF removed and a new tune to eliminte the regen cycle. You roll the dice though, since the warranty will be voided by doing that.

Check with Mike at www.5startuning.com I'm sure he may be able to squeeze some extra MPGs out of your stock 6.4. I don't know for sure if he does diesels though.

New 6.4l PSD can only have 5% biodiesel or you will void warranty and plug up your DPF. I had a 08 F-350 that Ford purchased back from me on lemon law DPF and tranny problems unresolved. But I used to average 13-15mpg on highway and 12.5-14 city. Towing was where it hurt me 7-8.5 mpg and I used it for towing 80-90% of the time the truck had 25k on it when left my driveway.

Thats pretty darn good. I'd almost dare to say BS on your hwy #'s. I've never heard anyone average 17's with the V10. Maybe once or twice, on a 500+ mile trip with a tailwind but even 15's average are far and few between. If you honest and your calculating it accurate I'd like to know the secret ;)

Yep the EPA is really killing these things like what happened to the gas motors in the 70's all over again. But its not all the epa's fault... dont forget the newer trucks are heavier, more powerfull, and larger (wind drag).

78bigbronco 08-23-2009 09:52 PM

Oh I forgot I was going to post my mpg so far. My truck is still breaking in probably, the mpg goes up each time. 70%hwy, 20% country, 10%city, 99% driving like an old lady. 3 fillups so far, 13.1, 13.6, 14.1. Rolling total 13.6 to date. Hand calc. Dashboard reads 13.8, 14.1, 14.8. No towing yet, except 14' boat.

I am fairly pleased with the V10 so far. If the trend continues I hope to get near 15 for my daily drive. Maybe with a tuner and tonneua I'd be in that 16-17 range, man that would be nice! But then I'd put 35's on it and back down again. :-jammin

.

I can see 15+ on occasion on some of the PA-Maryland trips I make. I think part of it is because a portion of the trip is a two lane highway with a 45 mph limit for quite a ways, and the truck doesn't see much over 60 most of the trip anyway. Get it in the city, tho, with the stop and go, the mileage tanks, sometimes dropping to 12-13 after just a few city trips. Towing central PA to Assateague island with 14K 5er with high frontal area usually averages around 9. Not bad for 21000 lbs going down the road.

Tankboot, as others have eluded to above, if you think you're going to run biodiesel in that 6.4, think again. I have some buddies making their own in their garage, but they're running 7.3's. The viability of bio lessened with the 6.0 and died with the 6.4...

17 on the highway with a v10? Really? Maybe a 6 speed 2wd stripper driving like granny... Even then it's hard to believe... The mileage king of my little fleet is my 07 Expedition with the 5.4 and 6 speed tranny; it gets 19-20 on the highway empty.

The best I've ever gotten with my 3v V10 was 13, and that was several years ago before dumping the contisux tires in favor of BFG's. I lost 1 mpg with more aggressive tires, and have never seen over 12 since then. I average 8-9 in town, but I have a lead foot... Likewise on the highway, I struggle to keep her under 80... Worst I've ever seen was 4mpg when plowing, but that's not really a fair assessment running an overloaded truck back and forth across parking lots pushing an 11' blade... :-X20 Worst real world was 6.5 towing a b!tch of a 28' enclosed car hauler through Wisconsin with a strong headwind (Truck stayed in 4th most of the time running nearly 3k rpm)... I pull off 10mpg regularly pulling my 7000 lb 8x16 enclosed at highway speeds, which I think is pretty damn good... :-X21

Meter runs between 11.5 and 12.2 around town

Tankboot 08-24-2009 08:34 PM

Diesel + used motor oil

I've been doing some reading, and found that alot of people are running Biodiesel in these trucks with very positive results, as well as adding used motor oil and trans fluid to the fuel, with improved results. One guy even says he is running a 50/50 mix of used (filtered) motor oil from oil change places and diesel fuel.

What do you guys think?

Not possible with the DPF still on the truck if removed maybe up to 20-40%, but not any higher states my Ford tech buddies at proving grounds. Injectors will plug up and fail.

Tankboot 08-24-2009 09:42 PM

Plug up with what? the oil?
