LEER Truck Cap

I just had a Leer cap put on my 2009 F-150 with a 6.5 ' bed. Great paint, horrible fit. It sticks out 9/16" past the bed on the sides. It looks like a Darth Vader helmet sitting on the bed. Both the dealer and the factory said this had to be done to keep from chipping the paint?*? Make sure you see one installed before buying or you could be sorry like me.

If you don't have a 2009 F-150 I wouldn't worry about it. The 2009s have a different bed and Leer is still experimenting with their molds. I had a Leer cap on my 2000 F-150 and it was super. Unfortunately a few of us have to eat ugly truck caps until they get it sorted out. I'll take a picture tomorrow but I'm not sure how to get it into the forum. I'm a very new
member.

I would not eat anything. You, as the consumer, should be completely satisfied with your purchase. If Leer did not do their homework, they owe it to you, to make the situation right.

Oh, and Welcome to FTE :)

Thanks Rich, I think I will take this cap back to the dealer.
Great forum.

FWIW I have a Century cap on my 2006 and it's a POS.
FYI Century and Leer are the same and are even made in the same factory with the same molds.
This is my work truck so I went for fiberglass rather than aluminum because I thought that it would look better... and in business appearances do count sometimes.

Anyway the cap fits like you described, it hangs over the box sides by at least 9/16" if not more. It looks ok at 20' or 20 mph, but not up close.
However my biggest complaint is the thing leaks like a sieve. I will not buy another.

I have a Leer cap on my 2008 Screw and have been mostly satisfied with it. The paint match is good and the overhang is only about 3/16", no leaks. I had a Century cap on a 1999 F 250 Crew Cab, I had the truck for almost nine years and had no problems or complaints with that cap. My only complaint with this cap is with the slam switch which only works intermittantly.

I am planning on ordering an '09 Platinum in the next 2 months in Ford's White Sand Tri Coat Metallic. I currently have a 95 F150 with a Leer cap that looks great and functions well. I planned on buying another Leer, but the website doesn't even list caps available for an 09 , let alone this particular color. I emailed the company and am waiting to hear back.
Pics and additional opinions of anyone who has a Leer cap on their 09 would be really helpful.

Great Forum; I have learned so much from everyone's experiences and opinions and plan on using the info when ordering my truck. Keep up the great work!

I called my local leer dealer and they said 3-4 weeks for delivery. I got 3 quotes for three different models $1335 for the 100r, $1450 for the 100xr, and $1970 for the 100xl.

Hopefully someone will post some pics soon!!!!!!

Although I have never owned one, I keep hearing glowing reports about ARE caps. Anyone here own one?

I had one on my first pickup - 1988 Jeep comanche. It was pretty basic but did the job. I recently got a quote for the ARE Z- series for a screw w/ 6.5' bed, they want 2100 + tax. I think my first one back in 88 was around $300 bucks. The z-series pics on there web site look sharp!

I have an ARE on my 2006 SCAB and I like it a lot ,too bad it won't fit an 09, with rack on top side tool bin and tinted windows $2300, kind of steep.
