-40

-40 *F this moring.... woke up at 3:30 am to a house that was 50*.. the air intake on the furnice was froze up.. went out and cleaned it out, froze up again around 5:30.. it only happens when it gets below -20*, witch has been alot lately.. kinda sucks.. but on a good note the 83 LTD fired right up this morning so i could come to work...

Wow I have been in many very cold climates, and never had a furnace intake freeze up.

Is it some design flaw on yours?

On a plus note, glad your Ford fired up for you.

hav24wheel 01-15-2009 04:47 PM

its a Rheem furnace. its got its air intake and exhaust pipes(2 inch pcv pipe) about 3 feet apart.. its was dead calm out last night, so from what i could tell the warm exhaust air has been being pulled into the air intake causing it to frost up. it was actually frosted completly shut at 3:30 this moring. i'm going to fix it tonight(i hope it works) by getting some more pcv pipe and move the exhaust up higher on the wall so the intake is not sucking in the exhaust. if it does not work i don't know what i'm going to do.

First off, hav24wheel, I sent you a PM.

Yeah it was crazy cold here on Thursday. The 2005 PSD ALMOST jelled up on me!!!! Almost but not quite . I did get the '79 running today, very easily :-jammin. That thing never does anything but impress me :).

I like how yesterday mourning it was 40 degrees colder than today!!! Only in the ND chapter!!!!!!!!!!

yeah iv run into a few cold weather problems with my ford powerstroke latly mostly due to my batterys starting to get weak if it doesnt start by the second try not plugged in its time to get the jumper cables out, still cranks over but not fast enough to fire up, iv run my hpop res empty 2ce now trying to continue cranking after the battery's are two low to spin the motor fast enough. also changing to synthetic on my next oil change that should help out 15-40 rotilla dosen't seem to be the best choice in this weather. on a plus note my toyota has fired right up first try every time jump start my ford...lol of course it better considering every part under the hood is ether new or rebuilt within the last 7-8 months.

so far this winter i have pulled so many people out of ditches i have stopped counting. its to the point where all of my recovery gear is starting to get worn out and most of it is now in need of replacement. this is the most brutal north dakota winter iv seen in the 3 years iv been here.

hav24wheel 01-17-2009 11:05 PM

this is the worst winter in about 10 years if i remember right... i'm still running 15w40 in my work truck 6.0 power stroke.. it has to be plugged in if it gets below 0 in order to start decent. But that has new batterys put in last year.. also i don't shut it off untell i'm done using it for the day.. the days i need it, its running from 5:30 am to about 3 Pm. that makes a huge Diff on those things.. it takes forever to warm them up when its cold out.. bet hey its about 70* warmer today than on the 15th. lol

Yeah, I have the rad blocked with the usual cheap-*** cardboard trick, and put synthetic 5-40 Rot in it on the last oil change. Turns over easier but it still takes a while to get up to operating temp even with the "winter front".

884x4broncoII 01-19-2009 07:39 AM

i have the cardbord "winter front" on my truck as well, it wont do much to help warm up times but it makes a great improvement in operating temp on the freeway in sub 0 temps just the cold air passing over the block will make it run cold even with a new 203* termostat

hav24wheel 01-19-2009 09:45 AM

hell i had to put the cardboard on the front of the car and van so they would warm up this past week. but this week it should be 80* warmer than last week.... only in ND. lol

you know what they say if you dont like the weather in north dakota just wait 5 mins

Any of you wonder how the hell we survive up here?

I have the oldest vehicles in the parking lot and everyone makes fun of them. That pos wont start., You trust that thing?, It still runs?. Yet when its -35 my 85 truck always starts and drives down the line jumping 2 or 3 cars every time.

I bought a 90 escort from a guy at work when he bought his new toyota. At -22 below his former 200k mile car was jump starting his new toy.

I laugh ever night when its cold. I always start!
