how to change ignition switch 1991 Ford F150
 

Hi:

I need some help before my husband destorys his truck!!
The key got stuck in the ingnition the other day and he kept trying to force it and yeah well it broked just kept spinning in cirlces. He went and bought the new ingnition cyclinder. The Manual book he bought didnt show how to take it out properly and he just did it. He had a hard time getting the steering colomun off. hmmm well he needs pictures or a diagram of some sort that he can see then he'll know better on how to do it. He did get the new one in and the steering back on but then it would shut off he had to disconnect the battery:) I was told that it is the ingnition switch but we need to know where it all is located.

Here is a brief description. The key switch has a small gear cog on it. When you turn the key this gear rotates. The gear is in mesh with a flat piece of metal with gear teeth cut along its length so that when you turn the key this piece moves up and down parallel to the steering column. In turn this piece is connected by a rod running down the steering to the electrical ignition/start switch on the outside of the steering column under the dash.
By loosening the bolts holding the ign/start switch it can be adjusted slightly further up or down the column. Might be worth trying that as it sounds like the key switch is not pushing the rod far enougt to get the "off" position on the ign/start switch.
If that fails then it would sound like something is broken or damaged inside the steering column which will mean that the steering wheel and the column covers will have to come off.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is.
If the problem is, the truck will not shut off without disconnecting the battery, then the ignition switch is probably out of adjustment.
This is an easy and quick problem to solve. The switch is located on the top side of the steering column, between the dash and the firewall. Two bolts hold the column to the bottom of the dash. After removing these bolts, you can lower the column and let it sit on the seat. The ignition switch has two bolts holding it to the top side of the column. The switch base has slots, and loosening the bolts allows the switch to slide toward the driver , or toward the firewall.
In your case , it needs to slide a little bit towards the firewall.
Then snug the bolts holding the switch down and reattach one of the bolts holding the column to the bottom of the dash. Check the key in every position to make sure it is right. Repeat until you hit the right place, then bolt the column in position with both bolts.

Drop the column down, turn the key in the off position, then adjust the plug,(on top part of column)that the rod coming from the key switch is connected to were it does what you need.

Ok so he found out that the ingnition rod broke. He has to go to pick a part to find a old one as no ne carries this. I have tried to look everywhere for a detail picture or anything that shows the parts places anything and I cannot find a thing. So any advise on how to change the Ingnition Rod?

Your truck is a later model than mine but I will give you what I think you will have to do. Take the trim off the steering wheel and undo the big nut and pull the steering wheel. Remove the screws holding the turn signal plate and pull the plate up over the steering shaft (just enough length of wire to let you do this). Remove the screws holding the column shroud and pull the shroud while rotating the key counter clockwise. You will now see the mechanism and should be able to replace the rod.
However click on the "search this forum" button at the top and do a search for " ignition switch actuator". You should be able to find more detailed instructions. Good luck.

My truck is a 89 and is older then yours, I had the same problem with the linkage in the steering column. The dealer had every thing I needed and the cost was about 25 dollars.
