Since you asked. Back in 1975 I belonged to a 4X4 club, and several members had snowmobiles. They convinced me to buy a couple, and a trailer for a good price. We decided to go on a day ride in the Blue Mountains. We were about 18-19 miles from the pickups when the other 5 machines crapped out. They had shared gas from the same can (I didn't). It was about 3:00 in the afternoon and we were just turning back to the pickups. The temp dropped like a stone to -22, and it started snowing HARD. I spent the next 10 hours transferring people one at a time back to the pickups. Several people had frostbite and had to be treated. If I had gotten lost or broke down people could have died........I vowed never to put myself in that kind of situation again. I sold the snowmobiles the next Monday....:-X09

Don sleds Have changed so much since then. It's comparable to crossing the country in a model T compared to doing it in a 2010 mustang. I have over 8000 miles on my 05 and haven't touched the clutches or engine.
Jason love your pictures. But our riding is completely different. Out east here we go for horizontal distance were you in the west go for vertical distance.

Hiya Jr!......

Bdox 06-07-2010 09:55 PM

You are right Jim, in the mountains, snowmobiling alway involves a hill climbing event or two.

Good Morning everyone. Is It Good beach weather?

J_E_Summit 06-08-2010 09:59 AM

8000 miles eh? Mountain riding is a little harder on machines:) I can burn 13gallons of gas (my normal tank plus most of my reserve) in less then 70miles on a really good day:) We generally rebuild our engines every 2500-3000 miles (every second season), both the top and bottom ends are getting freshened up on mine this year at a little over 3000miles.

Oh, its not only about the vertical, it is also about the snow. I can have a ton of fun on basicaly flat ground, if there is 2'+ of powder:)

wildstang 06-08-2010 12:22 PM

Down here in flat lands we spend most of the time at half throttle
I don't have the sled for deep powder like you guys. 2' of powder is a really big storm for us.
