Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly

Anyone have a link to their preferred brand? Being the holiday season, I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I also don't want to do this again anytime soon due to installing a cheap product. I'm going to try this repair myself, so I would like tomake sure I have EVERYTHING I need when I tear into my truck. Thanks for everyone's help. Y'all have been great to me. Wish I knew more so I could help y'all out a little from time to time.

Sorry, not trying to highjack this thread but, do you go in far enough to have to replace the axle u-joints when you replace the hub/bearing assembly?

The ford price for the 4 wheel abs srw unit is 377 list. Then you need studs at 2.83 (x4) and nuts at 1.36 (x4) and if you have vacumme hubs an o-ring for 5.48.

Just giving you an idea of what you may need.

No, the hub comes off of the spindle without removing the axleshaft.

I don't think I have vacuum hubs. Mine aren't automatic. I have to manually lock them and have the shifter on the floor board; not an electric switch/knob.

No. That's a little farther back.

I believe Timkin makes these for Ford. There are cheap Chinese knock-offs (or maybe they come right off the Timkin assembly line in China, who knows?), but the Timkin number for the 2000's WITH auto hubs and ABS is 515020. Without may be different, and later ones with different pitch studs are definitely a different number.

I went with Ford parts, directly from a dealer. The guy at the parts counter gave me "fleet pricing" and they ran $347 each. Also had to buy the o-ring sets for the ESOF. Cannot remember what that ran but it wasn't much.

I have not seen any that aren't Timkins. O'reillys carries them under the same part number (manual and auto hubs) for about $260. Comes with the studs and o-ring. At least, the last time I bought one anyway. Haven't researched it for a while.

I did a google search and found a set (2) for right at $300. Should I stear clear of these because of the price, or should they last a couple years?

Got a link? Sounds like a screaming deal if it's real.

Am I missing something? Why are they so cheap?

FordTruckNoob 12-15-2008 09:09 PM

I have some surplus hub studs if you are still looking to buy some.

Good question. I'd guess either you've found the cheap Chinese knock offs Pop was talking about, or they are wearing out so fast it's driving the price down.

Honestly, given those prices I think I would give it a shot. Worst case is they're crap and you're doing it again in a year.

Don't try to use the installation instructions in that second link....it's not even close to how it's done on a Superduty.
